Before this trip I was rarely one to sit in one spot for hours and days at a time but it has really paid dividends out here. Last year when I tried to photograph these black-tailed jackrabbits, it was always by chance when out hiking in the preserve but, this time I’ve sat at the end of the garden (or back yard I guess) and looked out into the desert. I’ve seen so much more wildlife by using a combination of hiking and staying put. .
This jackrabbit kept sneaking up on me and then hiding behind bushes before I could get a shot of him. The thing with these guys compared to cotton tails is that they sit still for so much longer after moving so every time I missed the shot I knew I had to wait another 20 minutes or so for him to maybe move where I wanted him to. Each missed shot was a longer wait in the ever increasing heat of the sun but finally he hopped out into the perfect setting. He only stayed there for about 10 seconds as a dog walker managed to walk past just as the perfect moment was happening. So glad I got the shot in time 🙌🏻
