Regrann from @themarinemammalcenter - Ke Kai Ola intern @bellasombreros made this marine debris monk seal to help raise awareness for Hawaiian monk seals and the threat posed by ocean trash. The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, where most monk seals live, ensnare huge amounts of fishing gear and trash. #endangeredspecies #monksealmonday ・・・
Meet ‘Ōpala, the Hawaiian monk seal! 💙 She is made entirely out of marine debris collected from local beaches.
Since moving to Hawai’i, I’ve had the opportunity to witness first hand the effects of human waste—and especially plastic—on our oceans! SO MUCH trash (fishing gear, toothbrushes, straws, plastic utensils, slippers, bottle caps, etc.) washes up on our shores every single day. As sad as it is that we’ve created this problem that puts so much marine life (& our own health) in danger, WE HAVE THE POWER TO MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE! ✊🏼 Your daily decisions DO matter & if we all work together, we can make CHANGE. ♻️ #malamaaina #marinedebris #plasticocean #livealoha #hawaiianmonkseal #microplastics #kekaiola #earthdayeveryday - #regrann
