We're home! As fun as unpacking boxes has been, we took a "break" to go plant our ice cream banana plant that had been on our patio. It didn't handle the ride here all that well, so here's hoping that some TLC and hugelkultur will save the day. It's been HOT and dry here, so our biggest issue is keeping moisture in without watering it excessively. We started with well-rotted logs and then watered them from a fish pond/rain catchment. Next came layers of more wood, branches, twigs, some weeds and then some of the sandy soil so that my helper could stomp it all down. We watered it again from the pond and added our banana. We took some soil from around the huge oaks in the back, along with leafmold, oak leaves and vermicompost and filled it in, mixing in the sandy, native soil as we went. Cardboard and grass clippings, that had pretty much turned to hay, topped it all off until we can get some wood chips out here. 🌱🙏
This is what I do for fun...
