At The Gates - To Drink From The Night Itself, collectors box set vinyl w/ stickers, pin, patch, art prints, poster, CDs, signature card and bonus etched vinyl 1341/2000.
The latest album from melodeath pioneers At The Gates, and first since Anders Bjorlers departure. This is the first thing to note, the album is great but is definitely missing Bjorlers touch and this does show in the sound to a degree. Anyway, this one walks a fine line between ‘with fear...’ ‘terminal...’ and ‘slaughter...’ taking influence from the first and third mentioned riff wise and taking the production quality of the second which kind of reduces the quality of listening. A modern melodeath album needs a good recording in my opinion or it just gets caught up in the sloppy truer than thou underground sound, which really isn’t my thing. The quality of the actual song writing is good though and there’s plenty of awesome riffs and hooks, especially with how melodic it is and Tompa’s keeping to his raw punk vocals is a welcome return from the last record and also shines on the excellent d-beat meets death metal ‘The Chasm’. All in all it’s very listenable and catchy but takes time to grow on the listener, it won’t be winning any album of the year awards but is a solid entry in their discography. The last thing to note is the quality of this vinyl set, there’s just so much cool stuff included and more of these vinyl box sets that are coming out now could do with the same treatment!
