A ještě jednou Lednice. Tentokrát se skleníkem. Ten rozhodně doporučuji navštívit. Já jsem měl štěstí, že se zrovna zalévalo, tak tam byl příjemný svěží vzduch. Ale jinak pěkný pařák:))) #lednice #chateau #zamek #church #kostel #temple #fotimejiznimoravu #southmoravia #morava #nature #heaven #sky #clouds #sun #spring #april #jaro #history #architecture #hiking #walking #treking #palavazije #uzasnamorava #palava #park

Happy #WorldBookDay 📚! This beautiful, historic book is a Lloyd's Register from the 1800s, found by our Virtual Endeavour officer Pippa in our Vaughan Evans Library. The registers record the details of merchant vessels around the world and can be a fascinating and valuable research tool. • 📷: Pippa Hambling (pippaKH on @twitter) | #librarybythesea #books #booklovers #library #reading #ships #history

I wish I knew who made this beautiful artwork in Mercat Del Born, Barcelona. I found it on one of my walks and couldn’t find a name because the text there was focused on the historical relevance of the place. I questioned whether it made sense to be aware of the past or the present. I’m often frustrated reading history books for reference because I believe greater learning comes from doing and learning from mistakes, but still can’t wholly deny the use of it. What do you think? #mercatdelborn #barcelona #whoisthis #unknownartist #history #present

Quelle passionnante saga familiale ! Review by Elodie: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2345390773 #book #history #reading

Suomi KP/-31: Finland’s WWII Submachine Gun The most iconic Finnish weapon of the WWII era, the Suomi’s story begins in the 1920s when Finnish arms designer Aimo Lahti (sometimes called the John Browning of Finland) enlisted in the Finnish Armory as a Master Armorer. In 1922, he was introduced to the Bergmann MP18, the world’s first submachine gun, and from that designed a working prototype designated the M-22, which was followed by 200 examples of the KP/-26 production variant chambered in 7.65 Luger, then the standard Finnish sidearm round. The Suomi most people are familiar with is the KP/-31, introduced in 1931 and chambered in 9mm Parabellum (124 grain (8 gram FMJ) at 1,299 ft/s (396 m/s) from a 12 in (305 mm) barrel). A muzzle brake was later added onto the KP/-31 to improve controllability, with such variants known as the KP/-31 SJR, and half of all KP/-31s had the muzzle brake. A variant designed for use within bunkers eliminated the stock for a pistol grip and had a thinner and flatter barrel shroud; only 500 were made and it saw limited use. The open-bolt select fire KP/-31 operates as follows: the user loads a magazine and pulls the charging handle to the rear, locking the bolt in the rear position, then pulls the trigger. The bolt flies forward under spring pressure, picking up and chambering a round. The round is fired, and the mass of the bolt provides enough time for pressure to drop to safe levels. The bolt is forced rearward, the spent round being extracted and ejected, and the gun keeps firing if on full-auto and the user keeps the trigger down. Weighing in at a hefty 10.2 lb (4.6 kg) unloaded and at a length of 34.3 in (87 cm), the Suomi has a high rate of fire of 750-900 rounds per minute, and an effective range of 200 m (220 yd), the latter thanks to it relatively long barrel. Sights were a rear adjustable notch and a front blade. The KP/-31’s magazine options included a 50-round quad-column single-feed “casket” magazine, where four columns of cartridges gradually merged into a single column, and a 71-round drum. Today, we take a break from our recent royal reporting and resume regular duties with the announcement of the next INTACH Heritage Award for 2017 ;) The previous award we announced last week was in the category of Restoration and Adaptive Reuse, which went to the majestic Manikyavelu Mansion that houses the NGMA in Bangalore. Today’s award announcement is in the Public Building category, whose proud recipient is the stately edifice housing the Office of the Director of Agriculture, a beautiful stone building on Seshadri Road. The jury noted the building’s functional continuity from 1915 - it was originally built to house the laboratories and the offices of the Mysore Dept. of Agriculture. It also chose this building for its architectural details such as the arched stone chajja with very unique springstones and key stones. These qualities ‘benchmark it very distinctly.’ This award was received by Mr BY Srinivas, Director, Dept of Agriculture. *** Every year, INTACH Bangalore recognizes and awards heritage buildings in the city for the great work undertaken in their preservation, conservation, and restoration. Awards are granted in four categories: • Public Building • Private (Residential) • Private (Institutional) • Restoration and Adaptive Reuse The INTACH Heritage Awards for 2017 were announced on April 7, 2018 at the Word Trade Center during the INTACH national conference on the Economics of Urban Heritage. The selection of the winners was by an eminent jury comprising archaeologist Dr SVP Halakatti, art aficionado Shri Harish Padmanabha and architect Shri Anup Naik. Some of the parameters the jury considered were the maintenance, architectural integrity and value, value to the cityscape and so on. The jury deliberated on the many entries for several hours before choosing the winners. *** There are lessons that we can learn from this restoration of this mansion and apply it to adaptively reuse another crumbling heritage structure, the Janatha Bazaar, to save it from being pulled down and turned into yet another mall that this city does not need.
