I’ve been asked this a few times lately.. How can flooring create the illusion of a larger room?
1. Use Wide Planks or Large Tiles: Large planks and large tiles will break up a room and create the illusion or more square footage in a room. If you opt for large tiles, go for a pattern but skip the border or design, these details will have the same effect as small tiles and will break up the room. With installing larger planks you will have less seams to break up the surface, again, giving the illusion of more square footage.
2. Install on a Diagonal: A diagonal line for one corner of the floor to the opposite corner is the longest straight line that can be drawn on the surface. By installing your flooring in a diagonal pattern, as opposed to parallel with a wall, will trick your eye into seeing the room larger than what it actually is.
3. Monochromatic Design: Having a flow of similar colours from the wall and the decor will unite your space and create a calmer aesthetic. This will also decrease contrast, giving the illusion of a larger space.
4. Room to Room Consistency: If your home features an open floor plan, then it is much easier to make the complete space look bigger. Install the same flooring or similar color flooring from room to room, to create the feel of one large space instead of lots of small rooms.
