Meet the very rare Giant Ibis (Thaumatibis gigantea)! This critically endangered bird is confined to northern Cambodia, extreme southern Laos with one recent sighting in Vietnam. With roughly 290 or so individuals left and a downwards trend, this species is inching closer and closer to extinction. These birds feed on aquatic invertebrates, eels, amphibians, reptiles, and seeds. They live on swamps and fields and rely on bigger mammals to dig these ponds, but their numbers are also dropping. These big birds get as tall as 100 centimeters (39 inches) and weigh around 4.2 kg (9.3 pounds). There currently isn't much known about their nesting or their breeding behavior. South estimates put their numbers around 100 breeding pairs with fewer than 500 individuals total, but these numbers may just be optimistic. As far as I am aware, no zoo or aquarium legally holds these rare and precious birds.
