*HACKATHON* - Drumroll please!
Wow what an incredible two days; six Master of Software Development students were partnered with high school students from around Wellington, to hack out new innovative solutions to keep secondary school kids engaged in science. "We're putting the BOOM back in chemistry!" Congratulations to the winning team - 'NZ Can't Ever Achieve Science Under Current Kid's Standards' - with their original concept called Crackerjack helping students to better understand chemistry. Each student was awarded a $2,000 Victoria University scholarship.
A special $1,000 was awarded to team Practical Soldiers for their clever low cost and practical Pūtaiao (Science) Kit, showing brilliant customer focus and business thinking. This money will be donated to their school, Taita College, science department.
A special thank you to the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), our awesome host, Mike Riversdale, and Marike Barnard for keeping everyone fuelled. To our great panel of judges, Sir Neville Jordan, Brendan Kelly (Deputy Chief Executive - Information Systems, TEC) and Eva Sherwood (Chair NZTech Women) and all the mentors, teachers, helpers and inter-team cooperations - without them these events are toast! "An open Tweet to all the Hackathon students. Remember; as much as we hope you have been inspired by the experience we too have been profoundly moved." - Sir Neville Jordan
