Rosie told Dan she was pregnant. “I’m going to marry you, Rosie.”, Dan told her.
Rosie was ecstatic. Now they just had to tell her parents. Rosie was confident that since Dan and her were getting married, her parents would give their blessing.
Rosie and Dan were going to break the news to her parents after Sunday dinner. Rosie had to beg her parents to let Dan join them.
While Rose and her mother were cleaning up, Dan told Rosie’s father he needed to speak with him outside. Rosie had a hard time focusing on drying the dishes anticipating how her father would take the news. She suddenly heard a commotion outside and the sound of Dan’s truck racing down the driveway. She ran outside and found her father on the porch.
“Where did Dan go?”, Rosie asked.
Rosie’s father lit his pipe and took a long pull from it. “He won’t be coming back, Rosie. I made sure of that.”
Rosie ran down the driveway hoping she could catch up with Dan but he was long gone. Gasping for breath, she fell to the ground. She really thought things would work out. She wearily got to her feet and walked back to the house. “I’m going to have to send you away to have the baby, Rosie.”, her father said as she walked past him. “You’re not going to disgrace this family”, he added.
Rosie saw her mother on the couch crying. “How could you do this to us?”, she exclaimed.
Rosie ignored her and went up to her room. She climbed into bed and started crying. Her hopes and dreams were gone.
Rosie reluctantly got up the next morning and went to the kitchen for breakfast. She tried starting a conversation with her parents but they just ignored her. She finished her breakfast and went outside to start her chores. She listlessly went through the motions. She felt numb and heartbroken.
At the end of the day as she was walking back to the house she noticed an unfamiliar car parked in the driveway. She walked into the house and saw a woman sitting in the living room with her parents.
“Rosie, this is Sister Marianne.”, her father said.⬇️⬇️⬇️
