Each year millions of Muslims refrain from eating or drinking from sunrise to sunset during the holy month of Ramadan (RD), which lasts between 28-30dys. Thus, RD fasting is similar to intermittent fasting as both fasting protocols incorporate a feast & fast period so let’s answer some FAQ’s: ➖ How much should train: Due to the degree of dehydration which often occurs during RD, energy, recovery & performance will likely be impaired thus you do not want to be training with large amounts of volumes & that decreasing total volume is highly advised. Rebai et al (2014) even showed that a tapering period characterized by a reduced training volume during RD can actually lead to IMPROVEMENTS in strength & power. This is even confirmed in “non-RD” individuals with Bickel et al (2011) showing that you can maintain your gains with as little as one-ninth of your initial training volume. ➖ When should you train: Lifting in the late afternoon in a fasted state or in the late evening in an acutely fed state has shown to not affect body mass & body composition of bodybuilders during RD (Trabelsi et al 2013) thus, the choice is up to you when you feel best. ➖ What about diet: Prioritise protein. Even though you are now limited to a reduced protein (PRO) feeding frequency & thus “missing out” on some opportunities to stimulate MPS, studies have still shown that consuming high amounts of PRO in a shorter time period does not negatively affect muscle gains (Soeters et al 2009, Stote ‎2007, Seimon et al 2015) thus your main priority should be hitting a sufficient total DAILY intake during your feasting period. Furthermore, be sure to consume adequate fluids & electrolytes during your “feast” as to avoid even greater rates of dehydration. ➖ Will you lose gains: If you can ensure you still consume adequate kcals & PRO during your feeding window ALONG with training (as above) then it goes without saying that you can maintain your gains during RD however, regardless, RD is still often accompanied by moderate weight loss (water, fat mass & some muscle mass) (Rouhani et al 2014) often regained soon after R
