Today marks 1 month since we launched the Online Academy. We are continuing to grow, today we passed 220 subscribers! I am so grateful to everyone involved. I have been working even harder recently because I won't be able to shoot for a few weeks and I wanted to ensure that a steady flow of new videos would continue uninterrupted. I also wanted to get the site up to 300 videos as quickly as I could. We are shooting and editing the Guillotine Control and Kimura Control modules for the BJJ 201 course. Each of these modules will contain between 30 and 40 videos, making them the equivalent of a full instructional on the positions. We will add a full 201 module every month, often 2 per month, in addition to several videos for all the other courses, so if you have ever seen any of my work and enjoyed it, I promise the value of a subscription will be off the charts. WOMAN BEHIND A GATE - Cochin, India In the original version of this photo, one of the spikes of the gate was tall enough to look like it was actually going up her nose.  I didn’t notice the distraction until long after I had taken the shot, but once I saw it, I couldn’t un-see it, so I did some retouching to shorten the spike and paint in the part of her face that it had been covering. I could have avoided the issue in the first place, by changing my camera angle or asking the subject to shift her position, but honestly, even if I had noticed at the time, there is a good chance I wouldn’t have changed a thing. For better or worse, in photos I often love it when vertical lines actually look vertical and horizontal lines look horizontal.  I even had to resist an instinctual urge to straighten out that rebellious, crooked spike on camera-right, which I now quite like.  So my obsession with vertical and horizontal lines means that I often shoot from a relatively straight-on angle, as I did here. In addition, shooting from a lower angle would have made the spike/nose problem worse, and shooting from a higher angle might made her look more like she was a trapped victim. Shooting from the left or right could have worked, but then I would've wanted to change lenses (from wide to telephoto), and anyway I wanted to keep the other end of the tunnel in the shot. This charming lady was already in this exact place and position when I first saw her.  My immediate impression was that she often spent time here, leaning on this gate and people-watching, and I wanted to capture her on-camera exactly as she was.  If I had asked her to stand a bit straighter or move even slightly, I might have ruined that. I certainly advocate taking the time to try out different angles and focal lengths and to engage with your subject, making adjustments to pose, gesture, and expression, in order to get things right in-camera, but there are occasionally circumstances, such as when asking a stranger for their time and you don't want to impose, and when you know you can fix an issue in post, when it's better not to mess with what’s already right in front of your camera, and just shoot.

M&J - Portland, Oregon, USA For the vast majority of my portrait work, I prefer to be able to see the actual faces of the subject(s), because someone’s facial expression is certainly one of the most important aspects of telling a story with a portrait. But it’s not the only aspect.  The gesture, body language, and clothes of the subject, as well as the surrounding environment have an effect. However, the couple in this photo take up a rather small percentage of the frame, so the overall look and feel of the photo is controlled mainly by other things: tonality, color (or lack thereof), contrast, direction and quality of light, the placement of points of interest, leading lines, and various other elements. And yet, I’d argue that this particular photo would be far less interesting if the pier was empty.  The couple’s closeness, which is surrounded by a large amount of negative space; the removal of color; the leading lines of the pier; the fairly blatant use of the "rule of thirds;" the contrast between the bright white of the umbrella and the dark black of their clothes compared with the drab grey of their surroundings; and the repetition of the drops of rain striking the water, hopefully all work together to make you, the viewer, feel something.  I’m curious to know if you do.

Have you ever had a conversation like this? I've had conversations where friends pretend they "care" and read messages, but don't reply, then block you when you're inconvenient. I've even been cyber stalked. If you EVER come across someone who doesn't take time for you, and ignores you, then pretends to be your friend, they're not worth it. You're a priority. Don't cling to people who can't inspire your overall mental health, wellness, intelligence or creativity. People who take but never give, you can tell them "bye Felicia". Do you. :) . #poet #poets #poetry #poeticjustice #spilledink #poetsofinsta #prose #poetrycommunity #writer #writersofinsta #writing #writerlife #motivational #inspirational #quote #quotes #quoteoftheday #quotes #gay #instagay #gaywriters #mentalhealth #anxiety #bloggers #depression #lifelessons #instructional #mylife #pastexperience #instagood

TECHNIQUE TUESDAY How to hold a Kettlebell When you hold a Kettlebell, you want to keep your wrist in a perfectly neutral (straight up and down position), as illustrated in the bottom two photos. The crook of the Kettlebell handle should sit nicely in the crook between your thumb and forefinger, and the handle should hang diagonally across your palm from the crook to the heel of your hand. This way, the weight is distributed evenly - and SAFELY - and you will not have to rely on grip strength to keep the Kettlebell in place. • If you rest the handle across the top of your palm (top left), your wrist will bend back and your fingers will be forced carry the load. Not only is this incredibly uncomfortable, it is extremely dangerous. Best case scenario, you injure your wrist. Worst case scenario: the weight slips out of your hand. 😳 • The top right is an absolute no-no!!! Not only is it impossible to position the weight properly when it is inside your forearm this way, but your thumb has to take 100% of the load and, well, it won't! • Questions? Comments? Concerns? Hit me up in the comment section! Also, let me know anything you would like to see addressed in future Technique Tuesdays! #techniquetuesday #gfitfitnessstudio • • #kettlebell #howto #instructional #fitsagram #personaltrainer #technique

SPOTS ON SQUARES - Lapulapu, Philippines This is George, my friend Jake's in-law's dog.  I took this from his (Jake's) balcony. I'm not sure why they (the in-laws) decided to paint this particular pattern onto their patio, as there were no giant chess pieces in sight, but I'm glad they did. While I would've loved to have George in a different position, and a different pose, he wasn't the most cooperative model I've worked with (for instance, the possibility of the subject peeing directly on the backdrop is generally much farther down my list of potential concerns), so this was the best I could do, particularly since I put off trying this shot until a few hours before my flight out of the Philippines. Even though I was leaning out over the balcony as far as I could (without risking bodily harm) to try and get a straight perspective, I still had to remove some distortion in photoshop, as well as boosting the contrast and removing a couple of tree branches peeking in to the bottom right square. Thanks to Hassan for trying his best to keep George on the squares and for holding the strobe. @jacob.maentz @hussinheather

A BREAK FROM THE RECEPTION - Titusville, PA, USA I managed to steal the bride & groom for a few minutes from the reception right as "magic hour" was coming to a close.  Got that blue in the sky by setting the camera's white balance to tungsten and using CTO gels on the three speedlites to compensate.  It had just been raining and, as much as I wanted to avoid it, the only way I could get the angle that I wanted was by sitting down in the mud.  However, since I was already drenched in sweat and grime from a hectic summer's day of shooting, I doubt that the mud was any dirtier than me. The first time I edited this I discovered banding (stripes which appear in areas which should be smooth), which is what happens when you do edits that are too extreme and there is not enough data to create a smooth transition in an area that contains a gradual shift in darkness. To avoid this, it helps to process a RAW file, rather than a JPG, and to edit in 16bit, rather than 8bit, and to try and get everything as close to the way you want it in-camera, so that you aren't tempted to go to extreme while editing.

2

robcorpuz

NAJEA THE CHOSEN 1 & CO. - Venice Beach, LA, CA, USA I had a long layover in L.A. and decided to head to Venice Beach to do some street shooting, and when Najea (second from camera right) offered to play me some of his tunes in the hopes of me buying a CD, I was down, and asked if he wanted a photo, which he agreed to. I was traveling light and used only a bare speedlite hand-held low and camera-right to fill in the shadows left by the strong California sun, and after some post-work this turned out better than I expected.

5

robcorpuz

DIMA - Seliger, Russia This shot is unedited (apart from cropping to a square), using the camera's built-in black-and-white filter setting. I nearly always shoot in color, even if I'm planning to go monotone, because while you can always take the color out of a digital image, you can't put the color back into a finalized B&W jpeg (at least not the actual color that was there originally). Besides, if you're willing to invest the time, you'll nearly always get better B&W results by converting a color image yourself with an editing program than by doing it in-camera. But every once in a while, I like to turn the camera dial to its dummy B&W mode in order to get immediate feedback on how it's going to look, at least for a couple of frames. But no matter how sure you are you won't need color, I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you're also shooting in RAW+JPG (which saves the original color data even while spitting out B&W jpeg files), because you just never know when you might want to see it in color later. While this photo could certainly be improved with some editing, I decided to post this one without changing anything, because sometimes you get lucky and get pretty close to what you envisioned right when you hit the shutter, and if it's not for a job (where at least some basic adjustments should always be made), I'd rather save that time to edit another photo that needs it more.

The holiday season is here: I hope you are all cozy and warm! 🎄 This was a challenging shoot but it ended up being a memorable love story (shot in snowy Moscow). The weather was fierce, and everyone and everything was covered with snow and frost by the end, but we had a good time and loved the results! One crucial tip: after a long shoot outdoors in freezing weather, make sure to put your camera and lenses into your bag BEFORE you go back into a heated area. If you don't, you could end up with fog clouding your glass up for an extended period, or worse, damaging your gear permanently. #RobCorpuzImages

robcorpuz

It's always a good idea to find a secluded area to do photos of your wedding couple. The designated area was already filling up with guests before I had access to the couple, and having other people around who aren't a part of the shoot is extremely distracting, and the couples photos are actually one of the few times of the day when the bride and groom actually get to ha e some quiet time together. Luckily, I was able to steal them away to another area. #RobCorpuzImages

I definitely have some kind of issue/disorder when it comes to getting vertical and horizontal lines angled right in photos.  It drives me absolutely insane if they are off.  Sometimes though, it can't be avoided. For this shot, I wanted to capture the lovely couple and their adoring fans in the context of this amazingly beautiful church.  However, to get both the people and the roof of the church, something had to give.  I couldn't move any further back, and if I angled lower, it didn't look as dramatic, because you couldn't see the ceiling.  If I angled up, the people looked a bit stretched.  There are tilt/shift lenses which can help with this issue, mimic the way old 4x5 film cameras work, but I didn't have one. In the moment, I elected to go with the second option, and give the people in the photo a bit of a stretch, for three reasons: 1) As I certainly going to get lots of shots of the couple and guests at normal angles where they weren't stretched, for this one shot I decided to prioritize making the church look more dramatic. 2) The people are small enough that I bet most viewers wouldn't even notice (but I bet you will now!). 3) Most people don't mind if you make them look a little taller and thinner in photos than they are in real life :^)
