San Diego Festival of Beer @sdbeerfest
Great fun! Here is the DL on the IPAs and some notes on the fest. First, IPAs represented, and most booths had at least one IPA. Most of them were traditional IPAs, and not the new haze craze. I tasted every IPA in the house, and here are some noted favorites:
Knotty Barrel - Big Trouble in East Village, IIIPA.
Burning Beard - Brutality IPA
Longship - Hoppy Ale (not an IPA, but hoppy and delicious)
Artifex - "No Name" IPA
Sierra Nevada - Hazy Little Thing IPA
Belching Beaver - Hop Highway
Ballast Point - Aloha Sculpin
Coronado Brewing - Guava Islander IPA
Indian Joe Brewing - Indian Haze, DIPA
Nice to see some relatively new names alongside the vets.
Stone was there, but curiously did not bring any new brews. They brought "cellar selections" which were archived bottled beers that they had in their cellar, and generously shared with all of us. I tasted a 17 year old IPA - the "5th Anniversary IPA." First off, thank you to Stone. That was a unique experience. Here is the reality though: IPAs do not age well. The become un-IPAs. IPAs even just a few years old loose their hoppy/bitter taste. What does increase is the alcohol and sweet/malt taste. So the older IPAs tasted more like barleywine. Still...they tasted good! And a great experience.
Overall, a very fun time. Some breweries made a good show as evidenced by the pictures. Others looked like they were brewed in your brother-in-law's garage. Check the pictures and see if you can differentiate.
