#Repost @natgeo ・・・ Photo by @FransLanting “Ivory is for Elephants” Two bull elephants bearing massive tusks are watching me in the mist of the Ngorongoro highlands. Big tuskers like these are particularly vulnerable to poachers and experts fear that there may be just a few hundred of those impressive males left anywhere in Africa. There is a population trend towards tuskless elephants now and that is a sad sign of the times. Makes me very happy, one step closer for these beautiful peaceful animals... #elephant #elephants #ivoryfree #ivorycrisis 🐘🐘🐘 #Repost @leonardodicaprio with @get_repost ・・・ #Regram #RG @elephantcrisisfund: The most positive news for elephants in the last six months has been the final closure of ivory markets in China and the decision to close the Hong Kong markets over a five-year period. But that doesn’t mean the Ivory Crisis is over. Although the tide is slowly turning, much more needs to be done. A combination of visionary support, collaboration between governments and NGOs and an integrated approach is helping but we still have a long way to go in our struggle to save elephants. As we celebrate World Elephant Day, read how our valiant partners are battling the ivory crisis across Africa and Asia in our new ECF report out today by clicking on the link in the bio. Wildlife Works’ founding mission was and always will be to protect the most vulnerable wild animals. It all started with our founder Mike’s first encounter with these wild, sentient beings on Safari in Kenya over 20 years ago. Seeing these intelligent prehistoric creatures humbled him and moved him action. Today we protect over 500,000 acres of Savannah which is home to over 2,000 elephants and part of the ecosystem frequented by over 14,000 elephants. ❤️🐘 Happy #worldelephantday Thank you Boris Polo of @h2o_extreme_dianibeach for this stunning photo. #elephantprotection #kenya #ivoryfree

🇳🇦 Vocês sabiam que hoje comemoramos o dia mundial do elefante? . . . . . Every 15 minutes an elephant is killed for its ivory. To save elephants, we must stop the illegal ivory trade! . . . #DontLetThemDisappear #coracaodeelefante #helpelephants #loveelephants #etosha #etoshanationalpark #africa #loveafrica #namibia #gamedrive #elephantlover #animals #wildlifephotography #canoneos #elephants #safari #african #animals #canon #Thisisafrica #ivorycrush #ivorycrush2017 #protectelephants #nomoreivory #ivoryfree #stopivorytrade #savetheelephants #jointheherd #pleasedontrideelephants #saynotoivory #worldelephantday

Happy #worldelephantday! Each African elephant could bring in an estimated $1.6 million in their lifetime through eco-tourism. That’s approximately 76 TIMES more than the value of a poached elephant. We have 10 years to keep these guys in the wild. And without wild elephants, other species are in critical danger, including humans. If you’re looking for ways to help: • (obviously) do not purchase ivory products • know where your tourism money goes • use your money to support tourism and NOT trophy hunting • donate to wildlife and anti-poaching non-profits like @wildaid and @biglifeafrica #elephant #🐘 #tsavo #voi #kenya #africa #stoppoaching #worthmorealive #ivory #ivoryfree #wild #staywild #nature #savetheelephants

#Repost @wildtomorrowfund 🐘🐘 . . Today on #WorldElephantDay, let’s celebrate the beauty and emotional intelligence of elephants. And most importantly, please join the fight to save them 🐘💪 The future of wild elephant survival gives cause for both hope and despair. In 1979, the African elephant population was conservatively estimated at 1.3 million. Today, according to the most recent 2016 Great Elephant Census, they now number just over 350,000. In just seven short years from 2017 to 2014, we lost 144,000 precious individual elephants to poaching. Just this week brought news of a fresh elephant killing field in Botswana with the shocking discovery of 101 elephant carcasses in the north. And yet there are glimmers of hope, stories of recovery and restoration due to the immense efforts of conservationists. Last month, Wild Tomorrow Fund together with @elephantsrhinospeople and @ezemvelokznwildlife, moved 53 elephants from over-capacity reserves in KwaZulu-Natal South Africa to Mozambique’s Zinave National Park. They will soon be joined by 200 more from another private reserve in South Africa. Last year, @africanparksnetwork completed the largest elephant translocation in history, moving 500 elephants from an overcapacity reserve to a newly secured and previously poached out reserve in Malawi. In Chad, Central Africa, the elephants of Zakouma, after being decimated by heavily armed poachers from Sudan, are now thriving with a 500 strong population, thanks to increased anti-poaching and international funding. China has closed its ivory market and New York is no longer a center of the ivory trade. The price of ivory has fallen from $2,100/kg in 2014 to $730 in 2017. We are making progress. Two steps forward, one step back. Let’s fall on the side of hope, not despair, for elephants. This photo was taken the first time I ever had the chance to work with elephants and the @dswt. I love it because it reminds me of how it felt to get close to these animals for the first time. I slowly walked up to an elephant with my camera and was greeted with a trunk in the face and I remember thinking, “is this even real?”. I quickly learned what it really meant to work with these little orphans - they are of course majestic and graceful, but they each have their own distinct personalities and they can be so cheeky! They are not at all how I expected them to be, and yet somehow better than I could have imagined. This day almost two years ago marked the start of a line of work in my career that I am still so proud to be be involved with. The feeling that comes with working with the intention of giving back to the environment and the animals that call it home is still one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. Happy #worldelephantday 🐘💛 I know this is the exact same photo that I posted last year, but I love it so maybe I’ll just make it a tradition? @dswt #WHPhidden#Dswt #athomeintheworld #travelwithintention #whyilovekenya #antipoaching #neverstopexploring #lovetheworld #magicalkenya #welivetoexplore #roamtheplanet #wildernessculture #nakedplanet #protectthewild #saynotoivory #stoppoaching #ivoryfree #stopthetrade #savetheelephants #nakedplanet #livemoremagic #roamnation #mynaturestory #gritandvirtue #naturallyimperfect #dametraveler #wearetravelgirls #sheisnotlost #notonlymama

Happy World Elephant Day! These are white elephants. In Myanmar and many countries in Asia these elephants are considered sacred and thought to bring good luck and prosperity to the country. This high regard for the white elephants helps to promote a respect for other elephants in the country as well, and often protects them from harm. That said, these white elephants are traditionally captured from the wild and brought to a special government sanctuary. Although they are revered and treated like royalty there, I can't help feeling conflicted seeing any wild animal kept in captivity for the benefit of humans. You can see more photos of the white elephants published by Nat Geo Latin America this week (link in bio).

#WorldElephantDay August 12th Elephants have returned to the Seshachalam Hills after several decades and recolonized it. They passed several fields and villages on the way undetected. It is remarkable how these elephants have found their way back to where their ancestors have lived. How awe-inspiring is the spirit of this gentle giant to be able to return stealthily and win it's territory back! India has the largest population of the India Elephant (Elephas maximus indicus), with an estimated population of about thirty thousand. They are listed as 'endangered' on the IUCN Red List; their largest threats being habitat loss and fragmentation. . . . . #elephant #wildlifeconservation #elephantday #babyelephant #india #indianelephant #biodiversity #biodiversity #indianwildlife #saveelephants #loveelephants #instaindia #ivory #news #wildlifewatch #nature #planetearth #travel #forests #intothewoods #happyworldelephantday #worthmorealive #endangered #ivoryfree #elephasmaximus #wildlifeonearth #ecowatch

Did you know that around 100 elephants are killed a day and currently more elephants are being poached than being born? Indian Elephants are severely Endangered. Botswana tourist magnet, the Linyanti swamps,is an elephant poaching hotspot! 48 butchered this August alone! That's around five a day! All in a military-guarded area, reports @thalefang Principal investigator of the Census Dr Mike Chase revealed their explosive discovery this week in a poaching report titled Ivory Tower. The report points to a poaching frenzy on elephants in the highly protected Okavango Delta. “(This August) we counted 48 elephant carcasses – forty eight – of all age groups. Five (were) … killed in the past few days,” reads the report. “All carcasses … had their skulls chopped to remove their tusks. Poachers tried to hide their crimes by concealing the mounds of rotting flesh with drying bushes.” This brings the total of poached elephant carcasses seen since July to 101. Dr Chase believes the Linyanti swamps area is a major poaching hotspot in Botswana. “Certainly, we flew over one of Africa’s worst poaching hotspots today. I can attest to that with data, having flown the Great Elephant Census. I not seen so many dead elephants anywhere else in Africa,” he said. The varying classification and age of carcasses points to a poaching frenzy, ongoing in the same area for a long time.” Last year there were unconfirmed reports of unusual sightings of poached elephants by travellers in the area. A traveller in the area, Nic Proust of Bush 24, posted a report in their website after “finding poached elephants everywhere” in the Linyanti Swamps. “Have just returned from trekking through some swamplands to find two more peaceful animals with faces chopped off for their tusks . . . by my calculations we have had close on 50 poached in a small area of about 10km wide along the Linyanti Swamp in just two months, (sic)” reads part of the report. Interestingly Dr Chase’s Ivory Tower report noted that the elephants were killed in an area with strong military presence with two airfields, managed by one of the world’s largest eco-tourism travel companies. #travelwritespotlight #elephantpoaching #savetheelephants #elephantconservation #illegalwildlifetrade #WhiteGold #IvoryIssue #ivoryfree #stoppoaching #conservation #wildlife #wildlifeconservation

The image has become a symbol for the primeval qualities of Botswana’s wilderness and the grandeur of elephants. I share it in recognition of World Elephant Day, August 12, to celebrate the majesty of elephants and to draw attention to the organizations that have forged a strong coalition aimed at reversing the poaching crisis that has decimated elephant populations almost everywhere. The @ElephantCrisisFund was established by @SaveTheElephants in partnership with @LeonardoDiCaprioFdn and @WildNetOrg. They support the right people in the right places and they are making a real difference. Check them out and lend your support so they can do even better. And follow us @FransLanting and @ChristineEckstrom for more intimate encounters with elephants. @ThePhotoSociety @NatGeoCreative @elephanaticsbc #Elephants #Respect #Dignity #Conservation #Wonder #Naturelovers #Botswana #ivoryfree #ivoryfreecanada #worthmorealive #extinctionisforever #elephants ♥️🐘

#Repost @maraelephantproject ・・・ Beginning in 2019, MEP is excited to welcome Dr. Jake Wall as our director of research. He was recently featured in an article discussing how scientists have barely scratched the surface in terms of using technology to combat poaching, study elephants and conserve important ecosystems worldwide. "Even with advances in collar technology, sensors and imagery collection, much additional work is needed to turn data into scientific insights or actionable intelligence.” Mara Elephant Project is looking forward to putting in the additional work in 2019 with Dr. Wall! 📷@savetheelephants #worthmorealive #extinctionisforever #ivoryfree #ivoryfreecanada #elephants #conservation 👌🏼🐘♥️ @maraelephantproject

#Repost @jamessuter Each one of these elephants is an orphan. But they have found a family, a new herd, in one another. A unique family structure brought about because of man’s intervention. A herd of elephant orphans. Elephants poached for their tusks, for ivory trinkets, have meant that so many elephant calves are left scared and alone. Thank you @game_rangers_international for rescuing the ones that you can and for working so hard to give them a life as close to normal as is possible, in the wild. These orphans pictured here, are in the last stages of being reared by the keepers at @game_rangers_international - they are at the release facility in Kafue National Park, and will decide on their own when they are confident and able to no longer return to their boma at night. For now, all of these elephants do come home still. They come back at night to the keepers. Where they feel safe. @iamkristindavis #elephants #saveelephants #worthmorealive #ivoryfree #zambia

@elephanaticsbc - “We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. #Repost from @stevewinterphoto // @natgeo photo by @stevewinterphoto A female leopard rises from sleeping in this tree at night fall There are nine sub-species of leopards on earth, occurring from the southern tip of South Africa's Cape mountains to the island of Java in southeast Asia. The biggest threats facing leopards in Africa include the illegal skin trade, wire snare poaching and human-leopard conflict.
