Feeling rather despondent today about the rhino poaching crisis. Hearing news that despite increased efforts we are still losing this war on rhino poaching. Cannot imagine Tom’s children or grandchildren not being able to sight these magnificent creatures in the wild. “In the first rhino war, between 1970 and 1994, Africa lost more than 50,000 rhinos. All range states except South Africa were severely impacted. Although the Apartheid government reportedly smuggled rhino horn and elephant ivory out of Angola and Mozambique, there was very little poaching within South Africa. Through the entire period, the South African rhino population grew unaffected by poaching. The country’s southern white rhino population recovered to some 20,000 individuals from a low of fewer than 100 individuals in the early part of the 20th century. Demand for rhino horn from Yemen for dagger handles was funded by the Saudi oil boom. In Taiwan, mainland China, Hong Kong and other Asian countries, demand was for the traditional medicine market. In 1994 this war ended, as Asian countries banned sales of rhino horn, enforced their bans, and carried out public education to reduce demand. For around 15 years rhinos across Africa and Asia were recovering, and very little poaching occurred. Everything changed in 2008, when South Africa began to experience a devastating assault on its rhino population. The second rhino war appears to have been stimulated by organized crime, the emergence of Vietnam as a new player in the rhino horn trade, and increasing affluence in China, which has reinvigorated a market that had been dormant for 15 years. In South Africa, the recent rhino crisis has been facilitated by corruption, procedural incompetence, and a failure to prosecute mid and higher level trade operators. South Africa’s response in fighting the second rhino war has been focused on paramilitary intervention in Kruger National Park. Although more than 300 poachers have been shot, few middlemen and even fewer kingpins have been brought to justice.” Great article written by Susie Watts, from @wildaid for more go to this URL - goo.gl/STm8et - or click on the link in my bio.

Serengeti - the great wildebeest migration at sunrise. One of the most spectacular mornings I have had on the @edgeofexistencefilm shoot. African light, these sunrises and sunsets are hard to beat. Just something incredible about them especially when you are surrounded by nature like this in a true wilderness area.

Leopards are known to hoist their prey into trees like this, displaying incredible strength. They have even been known to hoist animals into trees up to five times heavier than their own weight, such as a giraffe. When a leopard does not bother to hoist its kill into a tree, it risks losing its meal to hyenas and lions. A study by @pantheracats – a non-profit organisation that focuses on wild cat conservation – found that leopards in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve hunt at least 40 species of prey, from fowls to young giraffes. Leopards hoist half of their kills, and hoisted kills were 67% less likely to be stolen. Still, leopards lose one out of five kills to other predators like spotted hyenas, lions and even other male leopards. We filmed this in the Sabi Sand while on assignment for @singita_

Once widely present across Central Africa, today just three northern white rhinos remain alive, two of which are pictured. Driven to the point of extinction by poaching and the black market for rhino horn, today the remaining northern white rhinos are guarded around the clock by @OlPejeta Conservancy in Kenya, who are in need of funding to ensure the animals survival by using vitro fertilisation. 💰🐘 It’s day 8 of the 30 artworks in 30 days challenge, and I’m just barely keeping up. Whew, this is tough! 😅 For my 8th artwork this month, I created this elephant made of money and gold, just as the poachers see him. The Asian and African Elephant are both at risk as they continue to be killed for their ivory tusks, each sellable for between $75,000 and $150,000 depending on its weight. This ivory is used for things like piano keys, billiards balls, and even art. 😢 Most of the elephants that have their tusks removed and stolen by hunters die. 😭 Please check out the post from day 2 for more information about this subject, and let me know what you think of this artwork! 10% of the sale from this artwork will go to @world_wildlife to help protect these beautiful creatures. Please message me to claim. 💌

Anxiously awaiting the outcome of the vote on the Hong Kong ivory ban today. In Sept 2017 a group of us @wildaidhk @wildaid @humanesociety @humanesociety and many more testified at the second public hearing on the proposed ban. Chris Leadismo, the head of security @savetheelephants and I took great joy in reflecting on how far ivory legislation has come since that day he and I photographed and filmed the carcass together. Each and ever ivory ban that’s passed has required a massive amount of campaigning and public pressure and for the guys on the frontlines of poaching, like Chris, the bans can be a matter of life and death. #supporthkivoryban #endthetrade #worthmorealive #ivoryfree @the_lokefoundation

Over the past 4 years there have been over 100 ivory crushes and burns from Africa to Europe to the US and Asia in an effort to send the world a message of commitment to #endthetrade be #ivoryfree and that elephants are #worthmorealive This is also to ensure seized blood ivory never becomes legalized and to stop the demand and supply stimulation. The impact of these collective efforts have reverberated around the world. On a federal level the US implemented a near total ban and 7 states have passed bans and stricter wildlife trafficking legislation. China announced a ban at the top of 2017 and implemented accordingly. This Wednesday Hong Kong lawmakers will be voting on the proposed ban there. It’s another critical and defining moment and will hopefully be another watershed moment for the future and survival of elephants. I watched anxiously as a large adult male cheetah approached two youngsters. Generally cats in the wild, even if they are different species, are competitive and will often battle over available food. This can even result in them fighting to the death. The male attacked the youngsters, but due to their submissive behaviour - severe injury or even death was avoided.
