Hello everyone! I am officially back from my wedding and honeymoon. I stayed off instagram because I had nothing Whole30 to post ;) As much as I enjoyed my food freedom, it feels good to be back into my routine of sweet potatoes, meat and veggies. . . . While I do feel that the food that I ate was worth it over the last week, I'll admit I didn't always feel great after eating. I am definitely ready for #JanuaryWhole30 and it'll be interesting to see how the holiday's go. I think portion control is an important part of my food freedom. I can eat some grain and dairy and feel mostly fine, but if I go overboard, I'll regret it. . . . Here is my first dinner back from my honeymoon (on Monday - it's been a crazy week! This isn’t my typical dinner, we wanted to have something special. So we have steak (cooked in the sous vide), fingerling potatoes and asparagus. You always hear people say “reduce your salt intake to lower your blood pressure!” And they are 100% correct. High blood pressure is a key risk factor for heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, and other conditions. Sprinkle salt on a sliced eggplant or cucumber and then watch liquid come out of its surface. That happens because salt draws fluids out of plant cells. The same happens in your body, as sodium draws water from your cells and into your bloodstream, hence increasing your blood pressure due to the volume of your blood going up! High blood pressure over time causes your heart to work harder. After a long period of forceful heart contractions, your heart muscles weaken and no longer can pump all of the blood out. Because of this, blood may not reach the liver, which may cause the liver to lose its ability to excrete salt/water and retain more fluid. Fluid retention can impair bodily functions and cause organs to decline. I know I just threw a lot of science at ya, but the main point is to reduce your sodium to 1500 mg a day (which is a little less than a tsp). Yesterday was a HUGE day for me. . One year ago (yesterday) I decided to start my first Whole30. I was an exhausted mama desperate for something more out of life. I loved my family life and was so happy with my husband and son, but I knew I wasn’t taking good care of my body or showing up as the very best version of myself. Not even close. . Yesterday was also Day 30 of my FOURTH Whole30 (on top of several mini resets). It was the first round I led a group of incredible clients through as a #Whole30certifiedcoach, and it was confirmation that I am without a doubt on the right path. . I cannot even begin to explain what it’s like to lead people through such a powerful and life changing program. This work literally lights my soul on fire and fills me up like nothing else. Day 30 🎉 We made it!! For our final #whole30dinner we had Roast Pork Belly, Mashed Sweet Potatoes and Sautéed Zucchini • I lost 5 lbs this round, which is awesome considering I literally did not work out once 🙈 I fit into my pre-Teddy jeans 🙌🏻 I realized that I CAN squeeze in meal prep and making healthy lunches for work. I’m sleeping better and definitely have more energy. Just finished our 3rd #whole30 😊 I started in April 2016 and my husband wanted to try in May 2015 so I continued until July 2015 when we went on vacation. After our 3rd baby in 2017, we decided that the #januarywhole30 was calling our names and we successfully completed it this year! We just finished our second whole 30 for 2018! Low quality pic, but a high quality meal. Sorry I have been MIA, I got into a scooter accident and stopped the fall with my face lol. I know half of you out there ride those scooters, so pleeeease be careful and don’t think you can take every bump with full speed! Because I have wounds all over my face, I made sure to be more mindful when cooking my meals because I want to provide my body with proper nutrition to speed up the healing process. Zinc, vitamin A and extra protein is best for wound healing, so I used lean ground beef (red meat is full of zinc/iron), spinach (vitamin a), beans + quinoa + hemp seeds (extra protein) to stuff bell peppers! Please work your magic nutrition!!!!!! ••• 🔻Discard seeds and membrane of bell peppers and boil for 5 minutes. 🔻In a skillet, cook lean ground beef (or protein of choice) + diced onions + spinach + quinoa + corn + black beans. 🔻Stuff peppers with mixture and bake for 30 min @ 350 F. Throwback to this time last year when I was taking on my first #whole30 and CRUSHING IT!! Yesterday I felt like absolute CRAP by the time I got to afternoon carpool. Like, had to sleep through dinner so I could function by 7pm for small group kinda crap. As I was laying there feeling rotten and mad, I realized this was my body's way of saying "hey, you need to slow your roll and find a way to take better care of yourself", to which I thought, "Ummmm, newborn + 2 other kids 5 and under?? HELLOOO!!" But seriously, no matter what is on our plates, our bodies and minds are only capable of so much and when you put too much stress on yourself you'll eventually pay physically! I also randomly started thinking about how great I felt on the Whole30 and realized it was exactly a year ago! I don't think I can handle the amount of prep work involved quite yet, but I'm thinking it's exactly what my body needs after running the marathon known as pregnancy and postpartum . I'm going all in for the 2019 #januarywhole30, but until then, I want to start being more mindful of the added ingredients I'm choosing. Some things are such easy swaps that I just haven't been thinking about. Scrolling back through my Instagram pictures of all the yummy food I made that month has motivated me to start incorporating some of the easier meals into our weekly rotations again too. So am I the only weirdo that starts craving a reset?! Who wants to join me for the #januarywhole30?! 😁. I promise I won't get pregnant and have to jump ship after a few days this time! 😂

Today is definitely one of those days where you are too tired to make dinner, so you just throw together everything in your refrigerator. I have never been let down doing this so far because this was another delicious meal👌🏼 Brown rice + Brussel sprouts + corn + hemp seeds ____________________________ ••••nutrition fun facts•••• Because I am currently a dietetic intern, I think it’s a good idea to simplify and spread nutrition knowledge in each post! Does cold brew provide more nutrients than hot coffee? Not necessarily....both kinds of coffee contain the same antioxidant levels. So what is the hype about it!? First of all, ice coffee and cold brew are not the same products. Ice coffee is simply pouring hot coffee over ice cubes. Cold brew is made by steeping coffee grounds in cold water for a day. Has your stomach ever felt weird after drinking coffee....feeling sorta acidic? The benefit of cold brew is that it is not nearly as acidic, making it easier on the digestive system. Removing the acidity makes the drink more enjoyable without the need to put in extra calories (cream, sugar, creamer). And to make it even better, it has more caffeine than hot coffee! This may not look like your typical breakfast, but breakfast is just a morning meal! I know I’m gonna have a long day because I saw the patient list for clinicals today and boy I probably won’t eat lunch until 3:30pm! In order to stay full until then, I prepared a balanced meal with protein, carbs and fat. The more balanced a meal is, the longer it takes to metabolize and digest. You probably noticed after you eat a plan bowl of cereal, you’re hungry in the next 30 minutes....that’s because carbohydrates takes the least amount of time to metabolize. Protein takes the longest and that’s why protein is recommended for weight loss because you stay full and reduce your food intake! GUYS!!! Holy moly. Today was life changing. So today was a long day at the hospital and I needed a little ‘pick me up.’ I remembered that Trader Joe’s was 1.5 miles away from me and I have NEVER been there. It was like walking through the gates of heaven. I don’t think I can ever go back to any other grocery store. I can go on and on about that but I’ll stop here. I bought @traderjoes cauliflower pizza crust and it turned out SOOOOOO good! I’m not the biggest crust fan anyways but I honestly couldn’t tell the difference between this and normal pizza crust. Not only did it taste amazing, but it has added health benefits!!!! ____________________ Cauliflower is known to be PACKED with vitamin C, which helps you stay away from getting sick! (Flu season is here). This cauliflower crust contains no added sugars or saturated fat and is low in calories per slice! It DOES contain simple ingredients, fiber and vitamin C! Surprise, it’s #zoodles again, shocking! This time topped with meatballs that I made with @traderjoes vegan kale pesto. Little side of olives and tomatoes. ### I have been thinking of winding down on this account. I started it with a #januarywhole30 to keep focused and accountable. During reintroduction I found I can not tolerate dairy or gluten very well. Now, after 8 months of paleo-ish eating, I’m committed and it comes pretty naturally to me at this point. Just last week a friend mentioned that she’s been inspired to eat more veggies because of my posts. It definitely helps me to see other people’s delish and healthy food, as well. 🍁🦔🍂🐿🍁🦊🍂🌻🍁🐿🍂💛🍁🦔🍂I’m starting my Falling for Food Freedom program today!! Fall is my favorite time of the year - The crisp cool air makes me dream of cosy sweaters, warm mugs of chai tea and coffee, and comfy nights cuddled up watching Netflix! It’s also the time for a fresh start and BIG GOALS!! This month started off with a bang for many of you on the #septemberwhole30 and I’m cheering you all on for you awesome commitment! As for me - I need to focus on my Food Freedom - Intuitively eating and really thinking before eating. When things get stressful its a normal thing for me to turn to food but I’m going to be focusing on finding other ways to handle the stress. Practicing intuitive eating means slowing down, honoring my hunger, making peace with food and indulging when I feel it’s “worth it,” respecting when I’m full and satisfied. Jake and I are beginning a 6 week workout plan which includes strength training and cardio so I’m excited to get back into the gym too!! I will be weighing and measuring today just to see my progress from here until my #januarywhole30 but this whole fall until then will be a non-scale adventure!! This dinner will give my brain the fuel it needs to start my first day of clinicals tomorrow! Whole wheat pasta mixed with diced tomatoes + spinach + mushrooms + olive oil and garnished with fresh parsley. ___________________ Why choose whole wheat pasta? The anatomy of a whole grain is composed of the germ (antioxidants + health benefits), endosperm (fiber) and the carbohydrate (energy). When you eat refined white pasta, you’re stripping out the germ and endosperm, which leaves you with only the carbohydrate! When checking to make sure your pasta (or any food product) is a whole grain, the FIRST ingredient on the ingredient list MUST say whole wheat. All finished with my Sunday meal prep and I’m ready for the week! Something that you will always see on my grocery list are mushrooms. Mushrooms are packed with vitamin D, which is needed in almost every part of the body. There is sufficient evidence that show vitamin d linked to bone health and preventing osteoporosis. Vitamin D is unique because sunlight (UV rays) that touch your skin lets your body make vitamin D! That is why vitamin D is known as the “sunshine vitamin.” Because sunlight produces vitamin d, mushrooms respond the same way our body does when exposed to sunlight and makes vitamin d! Sorry I’ve been MIA! I was in Atlanta for my dietetic internship orientation and was SUPER busy! I’m finally back home and getting ready for my first day of clinicals on Monday 🤗 ________________________ There is something I want to quickly mention that many people don’t realize. What is the difference between a Registered Dietitian and a nutritionist? Well...ANYONE can call themselves a nutritionists. Heck, my dad can be a nutritionist! However, a Registered Dietitian (RD) must: 🔻Complete a bachelor’s degree with a focus in dietetics (Didactic Program in Dietetics or DPD) 🔻Complete an accredited dietetic internship with at least 1200 supervised practice hours (clinical + food management + community rotations) 🔻Pass the national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration. _______________________________ Don’t get me wrong, there are “nutritionists,” “health coaches,” and “wellness consultants” who provide great advice and are great motivators! However, be cautious when looking for nutrition advice on social media because many food companies pay nutritionists to advertise their “health” products. (Reason why it’s very important to understand research). When seeking nutrition advice, look for someone with the RD (Registered Dietitian) letters after their name. Every Registered Dietitian is a Nutritionist but not every Nutritionist is a Registered Dietitian. _____________________ For lunch I made a pita sandwich with tuna and cottage mixed together + avocado + cucumbers + couscous. ‘Twas the night before the first day of my dietetic internship! Orientation is in Atlanta so I’m staying at my sisters place in Greenville, SC since that is about the halfway point. I’m all settled in Charlotte and let me tell ya....I’m NEVER moving. This Queen City got the name she deserved!! This morning I walked around Uptown Charlotte and fell in love. There are SO many cute restaurants/markets/coffee shops and there is a brewery at every corner (I have 3 next to my apartment complex lol). It already feels like home 😍 _______________________ Because I’m on a tight budget and going to Atlanta this week for orientation, I wanted to keep my meals simple! Behold-roasted cauliflower steaks! Welcoming my sister back into the states with this delicious dinner! We picked cucumbers from our garden and made a tomato/cucumber salad mixed with chickpeas and onions. This morning has been hectic with all of the last minute packing and shopping I have to do before going to Charlotte. I wanted to fit in 9:30am BodyAttack class in my schedule but had no time to go home to eat breakfast/have coffee (and you know that’s a big deal for me). Luckily I was at the grocery store and came across this GEM! I swear I had more energy during the class than I did after I drank coffee! ______________________________ I LOVE how they put a picture of the turmeric root on the label🤗. The best part about this drink is that you can actually taste the turmeric extract that came from the whole root. Turmeric powder and turmeric root have two completely different tastes so it was exciting to find a functional beverage using the root! They added black pepper to allow your body to absorb more of the curcumin (the bioactive compound that does all of the magic). ____________________________ This functional beverage contains probiotics, which are live active microorganisms (mostly bacteria) that help ferment, decompose, and digest the food you eat! Not only is this golden beverage delicious, but it contains MANY health benefits that can prevent or treat certain diseases. Fresh turmeric is a powerful root that is composed of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. Research has shown that FRESH turmeric ROOT (shown in picture) contains more health benefits than turmeric powder. My research findings indicated that specifically adding 14 grams of fresh turmeric to this functional beverage significantly increased its overall antioxidant capacity and polyphenolic content. Below is the recipe for anyone who would like to try it out.
