I’m really proud of my daughter. She’s 16 years old, and she just started her first job. She’s a cashier at Wegmans. I remember my first job. I used to cut the lawn of our librarian when I was in 6th grade. I remember when I was finished, she would give me this big frosty cup of Coca-Cola, and I would feel so satisfied that I’d done a good job. Getting a first job is an important milestone for any kid.
But it also means she’s growing up. I remember when she was younger, all of her focus was on school, and what she wanted to do for her career. This year, though, all I hear about are boys. Now I hear stuff like, 'I like that boy's braids.' Or, 'When I get a boyfriend, he’s going to be 6'3!' She sees them, and they see her, and I’m just like, 'Augghhh! Nooooo!! I’m not ready for this!'
