You probably know by now that the way I approach food is based on my whole philosophy of life. So I really think about what I eat.
My forever rule is: Is it natural? Have humans been doing this for 100,000 years? What is the natural human diet to optimize our health?
Why I started the carnivore diet:
-as an experiment
-people were curing serious diseases (meatheals.com), losing fat, getting stronger faster, not counting calories or tracking anything, just intuitively eating, improving vitamins and omega-3s, growing new hair, stronger nails, reversing telomere lengths etc. so it was worth a try
What I found:
-I felt great. I didn’t see a crazy body change cause I wasn’t training hard, but there was definitely zero bloat, I just always felt lean, strong and ready to be active (or in a swim suit)
-there was a moment I realized I hadn’t had a food baby or any discomfort in 5 weeks, which was crazy to me!
-meat is extremely satisfying and nourishing, we’re brainwashed to crave sweets but meat seriously tastes better- I tried them right next to each other
Why I ended it:
My theory had been that meat couldn’t be unhealthy cause it’s probably why we evolved the complex brains we did. & that’s like telling a lion don’t eat meat because you might get cancer etc. No. That’s a natural food for lions. Meat is a natural food for us—still true
However, we’ve traditionally used herbs to further enhance our health. Even chimps know what leaves to eat if they have an upset stomach (& dogs/cats)
So yes, I still think carnivore is healthy, but ancestrally, I believe we’ve always eaten plants along side of it. Bitter herbs to help digestion. I can’t imagine humans starving and saying no to edible vegetation around them
I’d argue that the most human diet is as opportunistic omnivores. We’d seasonally gorge on honey, berries, fruit & roots, but still mostly meat. And to eat these with intention- even more human
But—we’re much different these days. There is a huge amount of people that may need to do strict carnivore without plant matter—due to a lifetime of processed, fake food or being malnourished and wrecking the body’s thyroid and hormones.
