Tasty Tuesday for December 5⠀ Oranges - Juicy and Sweet Snack Options⠀ By Marianna Duba, Registered Holistic Nutritionist⠀ ⠀ This popular citrus fruit does not only taste good (when ripe) but also provides a wide variety of health-promoting nutrients such as vitamin C as well as over 170 different phytonutrients and more than 60 flavonoids (whfoods.org). It is the synergistic action of all these active compounds that present oranges their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immune-supporting properties. Although some of us prefer drinking the extracted juice only, it is more beneficial eating the whole fruit as some of its valuable phytonutrients are found in the inner white pulp rather than its liquid center. ⠀ ⠀ The best quality ripe oranges are available from winter through summer, depending on variety. I have been buying oranges and other citrus fruit in bulk at the Orange Barn for a few years now. They sell freshly-picked Florida (occasionally California) citrus once a month from December until March. The fruit is often picked at the beginning of the week and transported to Ontario by the end of the week. There are a few varieties available with the option of tasting to help you deciding which variety to buy. The first shipment for this winter arrives by Friday December 8th. What does #weekendwarrior mean to you? Recently, I found an article about weekend warriors. This referred to weekend warriors as people who don’t have time to exercise during the week so they exercise only on weekends and usually overexert themselves. This can be hard on the body and can increase the chances of injury. Not to mention that after over-exerting yourself, you probably dread having to work out again, making it hard to build up the courage to work out next time. ⠀ To me, being a weekend warrior means that you keep up the routine of eating well and exercising throughout the whole week. We get used to a healthy food and exercise routine during the week when we have a set schedule, but when the weekend comes and we can easily get off-track. Tasty Tuesday - Juicing, the Gentle Daily Detox⠀ By Marianna Duba, Holistic Nutritionist⠀ ⠀ Our body works diligently around the clock to neutralize, transform and eliminate the accumulated toxins. One of the easiest way to support this hard-working machinery is drinking freshly pressed vegetable and fruit juices on a regular basis. They provide the essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes, amino acids and other phytonutrients that many of us are deficient of as we do not eat enough fresh produce. ⠀ Juicing separates the fiber from the nutrient-dense liquid thus using fruits alone for extraction may result in a blood sugar imbalance (a spike and subsequent crash). Therefore, a health-boosting juice needs to be prepared from both vegetables and fruits in a 3:1 ratio. Green leafy vegetables, cucumber, celery, carrots, broccoli, herbs (cilantro, parsley, mint), ginger and turmeric can be combined with apples, pears, pineapple or oranges to make the final product tastier. ⠀ Yesterday, I tried out one of Cherie Calborn’s juice recipes, The Energy Power Juice. #Weekendwarriors are in tune with their body. Our body has so much wisdom and it will tell us what we need when we listen. It tells us when we are dehydrated, tired, hungry, inflamed and when we need to exercise. ⠀ ⠀ The weekend is a good time to start the practice of listening to our bodies. Check in a few times a day and notice how your body feels. Do you need water? Are you tired? Do you feel the need to stretch and move? Also take the time to notice how your body feels after you eat. Did that specific food agree with you? Is it upsetting your stomach or are you feeling tired? Tasty Tuesday - Red Smoothie Bowl⠀ By Marianna Duba, Holistic Nutritionist⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Last week, I found a great recipe on buff.ly/2xluG3P, based on an unusual combination of raspberries and cauliflower. The superfood cauliflower, a member of the cruciferous family of vegetables, provides various phytonutrients, such as indole-3-carbinol and sulforaphane with cancer-preventative properties. In addition, it delivers an impressive amount of vitamin C, some B vitamins, important minerals (magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and manganese) and fibre. For those of you, who dislike cauliflower’s characteristic flavour, either in the raw or cooked form, I suggest trying the Rad Red Smoothie Bowl:⠀ ⠀ https://buff.ly/2xlAFFM ⠀ ⠀ This recipe blends the flavours of all the ingredients in such a delicious way that your final impression is “eating” a creamy sweet refreshing smoothie without tasting cauliflower in it.⠀ ⠀ For my breakfast smoothie bowl, I made a few changes in the original recipe. Sea Buckthorn - Ontario’s 100 Mile Citrus⠀ ⠀ Are you familiar with the small, bright orange berries called sea buckthorn berries loaded with important health-supporting nutrients? If not, here are some details on the nutritional content and special features of this unique superfruit.⠀ Sea buckthorn is grown on a farm in southern Bruce County. The tart citrus flavoured fruit contains a relatively high concentration of immune-boosting vitamin C.
