An album that's been progressively growing on me lately is J. Cole's 2018 release, KOD. I've honestly always despised this album, i hated the beats, hooks, the kiLL Edward features, and always viewed his flows are great but wasteful because of my hate for the rest of the record from a musical standpoint. But I've been forcing myself (not in an unhealthy fashion), to continuously listen to the album (not consecutively tho) until it grew on me, because I've always had belief that it had the potential to. And sure enough, after about my 8th listen, it finally clicked with me. I always had high appreciation for KOD conceptually, but that love was amplified recently since I've been REALLY taking into accountability where Cole's heart and soul were when he was creating this album, pushing to convey a mature message and warning to the youth about drug addiction and drug abuse and executing it perfectly, regardless of the ailments that plague the actual music. I've grown to enjoy the majority of the hooks/bridges (i use to hate the BRACKETS bridge for some reason), and I've even managed to muster some enjoyment out of the title track, outside of the "I'm lit" line. The final verse on BRACKETS is absolutely incredible and Cole's depiction of the corruption within the government taking money from poorer areas in small black communities so they could be used to fund weapons that will "circulate around the country and end up in my hood", still manages to blow my mind. I really enjoy the heart wrenching story of his mother's addiction to cigarettes and alcohol and him witnessing that as a child he paints on the atmospheric track Once An Addict. The track i have the most love for is 1985, purely for how saturated in maturity the track is when Cole is rapping in predictive text about the future of all the "mumble rappers", and it makes me distribute more respect to Cole that it was an advisory reply to a diss lol. But as much as I'd love to properly enjoy this album, there's too many issues in the nooks and crannies of the record to fully like it, but for the most part its grown on me from a 2.5/10 to a mixed bag at 5/10. What are your thoughts/ratings for KOD?
