Where: Xaco Taco
What: Carne Asada, Al Pastor, Fried Oyster, Baja Fish, Smoked Lamb Barbacoa, and Cochinita Pibil tacos
Overall Score: 8.5/10
The Food: If you know me, you know I'm extra critical of tacos. I can say with confidence that these are the best tacos I've had in Rhode Island. Starting with the standard, the carne asada tacos were juicy and packed with flavor, top with a generous amount of fresh crumbled queso blanco. The meat in the Al Pastor taco was just as well seasoned as the carne asada, but the pineapple on top wasn't sweet and bordered on tart. The fried Oyster taco was something I had never seen offered anywhere else so I gave it a shot and it did not disappoint. The slightly pickled carrots paired perfectly with the light flavors of the oyster. The Baja fish also came well paired with some slightly spicy pickled radish. The fish itself was not overly fried and flaked apart nicely. The smoked lamb was a little low on seasoning, but the crispy chickpeas on top kept things interesting. The cochinita pibil wasn't my favorite. It sounded good but was too wet and just wasn't well executed. Everything comes available with Chapulines (fried Grasshoppers) for an extra dollar. I tried one separately, it wasn't bad. Didn't really taste like much other than some generic fried thing.
Environment: Xaco Taco had a great kind of junk yard feel to it. There is an old VW bus in the back that they sometimes cook inside of, and there's a lot of wood and pipe decor. Street parking isn't bad.
