Today, during nature circle, two kids were not so interested in the project I planned. They asked if they could do something else. I felt a little disappointed, but didn’t want to force them. While wondering and chatting, they found some nuts on the ground and got curious about what was inside them, so I encouraged them to find a way to get them open. After trying a few different ways, I think they figured a rock worked best. They picked them apart, gathering them into beautiful piles. I started asking about which trees they were from and they didn’t know. We searched the trees above us to find the nuts. While we were searching two big, beautiful, light colored, red tailed hawks flew above us. We all quieted and I felt a feeling of awe spread through the group. One of the kids eventually spotted the nuts in one of the trees nearby! We smelled the leaves to verify that it was indeed, a bay tree. I am going to do some research on eating/processing bay. That would be fun!
