Starting to feel the chills of winter! Absolutely love making this “Stone Soup” I learnt from my mama. She told us a story about a poor beggar and a miserly woman. The story goes that the beggar asked a woman for some food, but she refused. The beggar then said that he could make her soup from nothing but a stone. Being miserly and greedy, as well as intrigued, the woman agreed and let the man into her home to make her this soup. He asked for water and a pot, the woman provided this. The beggar placed the stone into the pot and started to boil it, “ I know what would make this soup even better, some carrots”, the woman agreed and brought him some carrots. After a while, the beggar said “I know what would make this soup even better, some potatoes”, again the woman agreed and gave the beggar potatoes for the soup. Like this, the beggar asked for more and more vegetables. Finally the beggar stood up, and said the stone soup was ready. He poured the woman a bowl, and then himself a bowl and ate to his fill!
My mama added lots of different ingredients and I have to say, I feel really proud that it was her own recipe and she has passed it onto me. Mainly because I asked her for it, and that my sister really couldn’t be bother to make it! Lol!
This soup is an amazing remedy for the cold, flu, and generally beating the cold weather! I’m lucky my boys enjoy it, although I do have to blend it completely!! Roll on winter evenings and hot stone soup 😋
