Modern Education and Culture Impact on Both Language and Botanical Healing Traditions of the Maya in Belize!
The ethnobotany connects to the language since, well, humans often depend on speech communication. Here in Belize the use of language and medicinal plants stay strong. I commonly encountered children who spoke four or five languages (English, Spanish, Maya Kekchi, Maya Mopan, and Creole). They also had an in-depth knowledge of the wilderness where they ran smoothly, barefoot, across stony trails and swam silently through river water games. But will the current trend in education and pressure to get a job hinder this? I will always remember a child telling me how he has to leave the village and farm to get a job in the tourist industry.
