Chapter 10: Considering an "Alternative Capacity to Desire": Institutional Anomie Theory, the American Dream, and the Ontological Turn by James B. Pratt, Jr. •
I've felt overjoyed and anxious to release it to the world. The process of writing this was an adventure and a challenge, but I learned a lot a long the way. I hope my critique of one of the key theories of crime, Messner and Rosenfeld's Institutional Anomie Theory (IAT), is useful for someone (as useful as it has been for me). Engaging with meaning by relying black radical and critical thought is essential for the development of better theories of crime. Here, building in part on Martin Luther King Jr. and his discussion of "an alternative capacity to desire" I wrestle with a core concept of IAT, the American Dream, and expose it's limited conceptualization.
