Fall 2015. Mia & I we’re invited on a ride-along aboard a 700-foot Chinese bulk carrier, with our friend Mark Baummer, a Chesapeake Bay ship’s pilot. We were on call most of the evening aboard ISBJÖRN in Annapolis. “When I get word of which ship I’m getting, you’ll have 90 minutes to get to the pilot station in Baltimore,” Mark told us. At 10pm we got the call...at the station, a driver took the 3 of us up to the C&D canal where the pilots have a house to wait for the ships. We picked a room and slept until 0200, when the dispatcher woke us up. The ships don’t stop - the pilot boat captain took us out alongside. The ship was light (unloaded) so riding super high, and the climb up the rope ladder was sketchy! We rode down the Bay with Mark on the bridge, anchoring off Annapolis just after sunrise. One of the coolest experiences of my life!
