Explore the microscopic world of insects 🕷🐞 🦋 in a fantastic pop-up photographic exhibition in the Whale Mall. 🔎👀📸 Queensland Museum staff research, sort, document and care for a growing collection of approximately 4 million fragile insect specimens, some dating back to the 1870s. The images in this exhibition are a small selection of the work undertaken by Geoff Thompson, Collection Imager for Queensland Museum.
Geoff began work at Queensland Museum in 1982. His work in caring for and documenting significant insect collections has evolved from hand-done, highly-detailed illustrations, drawn directly from the microscope, to the establishment of a sophisticated digital imaging system.
Until 1996, it was difficult to take a clear photograph of a small insect with visible light. Now focus stacking programs combine all the focussed portions from a series of photographs, into one sharp image. All the images of single insects in this exhibition, including detail shots, were focus stacked with Zerene Stacker software.
Geoff Thompson’s award winning work has exposed thousands of museum visitors and the research community to the details and beauty of insects not visible to the naked eye, whilst helping to ensure the safety of these invaluable collections. Insectarium is a larger than life look at art meets science.
