Not everyone realizes it, but national parks often have privately owned land within their borders. This can make protecting the desert ecosystem more complicated. Our job at MDLT is to help piece together our parks and wilderness areas. So, we’re VERY HAPPY to announce we’ve conserved a 145-acre property inside the Mojave National Preserve! The land is surrounded on three sides by Joshua Tree forests, and is full of creosote, blackbrush and Mojave yucca.
As our map shows, there is a lot of private land in this part of the preserve. Especially in the Lanfair Valley, where there has been a long ranching, mining, and homesteading history. But few people live there today.
This new property will one day be turned over to the preserve. To date, we have acquired 22,500 acres within the preserve, the third largest national park unit in the lower 48 states!
We’re looking forward to cleaning up the land, restoring native plants and making it accessible to the public. .
