Moving on to invertebrates of the Devonian, beginning with vases! I mean sea sponges! I love all these weird shapes (especially Hydnoceras on top) but the texture is very hard to get right. These are related to modern glass sponges, so I went with a more muted coloration. #paleoart #paleontology #scientificillustration #sciart #animals #wildlife #oceania #marinebiology #illustration #artistsoninstagram #fossil #fossils #art #artist #nature #sketchbook #inkdrawing #coloredpencils #museum #naturalhistory #nature #sponge #sponges #sea #coral #coralreef #reef #blueplanet #scicomm

Suskit is a pond skater with aspects of a squeezy honey bottle and curling stone! 🍯 Surskit’s biological inspiration is the most obvious influence - a pond skater or water strider (pic 2). These insects uses surface tension to ‘walk’ on water. Of their six legs, the front ones are the smallest and held in front of the body. These are absent on Surskit to create space for the cute face design. 🍯 The Pokedex states that Surskit ‘secretes a thick, sugary syrup from the tip of its head’ if it ‘senses danger’. The secretion of a liquid when threatened is a common behaviour in many insect species (famously ladybugs), however it is usually foul-smelling and unappealing! It seems that Surskit secretes a honey-like substance because its design is meant to connote a squeeze bottle! The yellow part of the head and ‘antennae’ certainly resembles the cap of a Japanese honey bottle (pic 3). 🍯 I also believe that Surskit is inspired by a curling stone (pic 4), a rounded chunk of granite with a handle which is slid across a sheet of ice in the Olympic sport called curling. Suskit’s body is a similar shape and its yellow head ‘cap’ with bent antennae may reflect the brightly coloured handle. Further evidence is found in the Pokedex entries; it is described ‘gliding across the surface of water as if sliding’. 🍯 Etymology: Surf[🏄]/Surface[⛳]+Skate[⛸️]/Skitter[🏃] AR photo by @tuulathecat

Have you ever been lucky enough to spot the enigmatic Long-eared Owl (Asio otus otus)? This hard-to-find bird is a nocturnal hunter and usually camouflages itself in heavy foliage. It has tawny facial discs, erect ears tufts, and bright yellow eyes. The Long-eared Owl has a sharp sense of hearing: it can catch prey, like mice and voles, by sound in total darkness. Its feathers also help with stealth—they are fringed, which help to muffle the sound of its flight. Photo: Becky Matsubara

Violet, Pansy, Poppy 🌸 • Three of my favourite flowers (from a list about 100 species long 😉) • Do you have a favourite flower or one that means something to you? My Nan had Fuchsias in her garden and i could never resist popping the buds. It was like bubble wrap! I’d be hidden away, popping merrily, when my Nan would suddenly shout from inside the house “Are you popping my Fuchsias?!”...🙈how did she know?! I have no idea, but every time i see them now i pop one in memory of her 💕 . . . . . . #creativefolk #watercolor #drawing #illustration #natureinspired #drawingoftheday #watercolordrawing #illustrationsketch #artistsoninstagram #naturalhistoryillustration #naturalhistory #naturestudy #instaart #fabercastell #myartwork #mydrawing #flowerart #floralwatercolor #botanical #botanicalart #natureart #tempuradesign #illustrationgram

Cacnea is a desert cactus with serious Halloween vibes. 🌵 Cacnea’s round body and yellow flower are inspired by a type of barrel cactus, the North American genus Ferocactus (pic 2). These cacti have large spines and many have bright yellow flowers (stylised into a crown on Cacnea). Cacnea’s arms take the shape of a stereotypical desert cactus (i.e. the Saguaro) but the spines have been arranged to make them resemble clubs or maces. 🌵 Cacnea’s eyes and mouth are formed by holes in the cacti’s exterior. This gives Cacnea a creepy appearance; unhealthy cacti can develop holes due to over-watering or bacterial infections. The arrangement of the holes as the mouth makes it appear like it has been partially sewed close. This Halloween theme is developed by the fact that these holes, within the round body, makes Cacnea resemble a jack-o’-lantern (pic 3). This theme is maintained when Cacnea evolves: Cacturne is partially inspired by a scarecrow, which commonly use carved pumpkins as heads. 🌵 Etymology: Cactus[🌵]+Sabonea[Cacnea’s 🇯🇵 name] AR photo by @feelthedango

Flowers first appeared 149 million years ago. Flowers enable plants to reproduce above water. One of the greatest challenges for the first organisms taking the step to a life lived on land was reproduction. Life once completely relied on the ocean as a sort of conveyer belt to fertilise eggs to become offspring. The plants devised a genius way to overcome this barrier, the flower. Contained in the flower was a pistil and multiple stamen that acted as it’s reproductive organs. They would spread their pollen with the help of wind, however later when the insects arrived, they became more and more intricate to lure them in so some species even become completely independent on insects and they could take the role of the wind that 140 million years ago was the role of the ocean and still today almost every marine creature relies on it to produce offspring. #naturalhistory #nature #macro #photography #yourshotphotographer #purple #flowers #plants

Regrann from @lostspeciesday - Today there are two hippo species. 1000 years ago, there might have been five. Madagascar was, well into historic times, a home for hippos. These “pygmy” animals are thought to have been hunted to extinction for food following human arrival on Madagascar. #extinct #extinction #extinctspecies #extinctionisforever #lostspecies #naturalhistory #naturalhistorymuseum #hipposkull #animalskull #osteology #sixthmassextinction #anthropocene #animalfacts #naturalworld - #regrann

Exoplanetary landscapes, unlimited series started in 2015. Inkjet color print on transparent plastic sheet, large magnification boxes, displayed on graph paper, 2.5 X 3 X 3 cm (by box). #exoplanetarylandscapes #research #minerals #lawsoftheuniverse #thegranddesign #microcosm #macrocosm #cosmos #scale #physics #mineralogy #naturalhistory #universe #entopan #orphism #hermetism #pythagorism #gnosticism #ancientwisdom #alchimie #metamorphose #mythologie #objetsrituels #naturalism #maeltraica #atelier #grandoeuvre #grandœuvre

Both Crinum (pictures), Amaryllis, Galanthus and Narcissus are part of a rather large entangled ‘family tree’ (phylogeny) called Amaryllidaceae. Resarch from our resarch-group and ucph have shown that they contain active compounds for diseases in the central-nervous system. . Galanthamine, which is e.g. found in spieces of Galanthus is already a registred drug called Reninyl and is used in the treatment of dementia. . There’s around 850 Amaryllidaceae-species! . . . . . . . . . . #scicomm #botanyDK #naturefacts #botaniskhavekbh #statensnaturhistoriskemuseum #research #plantscience #science #exploredenmark #jungle #summer #macrooftheday #kbhuni #botany #botanicalgarden #Amaryllidaceae #Crinum #crinumbulbispermum

#pangolin #desproges #naturalhistory #animaltotem #animallover #taxidermy
