Bit of a long post today... Snorkelling under St Leonard's pier today I came across a deceased Banjo Ray (first picture) that has obviously been dead a number of days. It had been deliberately killed by a recreational fisherman and discarded. Knifed through the head. I then came across a live, heathy looking Banjo (second picture), which made me feel a lot better. Moving on I came across another dead Banjo Ray (third picture). All within a 20 meter stretch of pier. I then decided I should have a closer look at the "healthy" ray I'd seen before. I'm glad I did because it had a hook right though its mouth attached to a line which had been DELIBERATELY tied to a nearby pylon! The surface weather was terrible today an. I hadn't seen a single person in the pier all morning so this ray had probably been left tied there at the very least since before I arrived (4 hours earlier) or even the day before. I tried to dislodge the hook without success so got out I the water, ran (in full snorkel gear. Fins and all) back to my car to get some scissors (it must have been like watching a man sized goose). I managed to cut the line and after about 20 minutes remove he hook too! Now I've heard of animals returning to divers after an incident like this to say "Thankyou" but I've always taken it with a grain of salt. After only a few seconds this Ray realised it was free and took off spectacularly! However! While photographing a nudi 10ish minutes later I feel a small bump on my hip. He was back! The Banjo then followed me all he way back to the ladder stopping to snack on something in the sand on the way. While today's story has a happy end to it, unfortunately it is fairly common practice to maim and kill Ray's in this way to supposedly prevent recapture so let's make something abundantly clear: this action is highly illegal and a breach of the recreational fishing licence. Anything you catch must be kept or returned UNHARMED. Knifing a ray like this doesn't actually kill them immediately. They can survive for hours to a day with this brain damage, partial paralysed, before hey die.

The rocky headlands of Fitzgerald River National Park on the south coast are simply breathtaking! #Repost @kenjineering ・・・ I really really encourage everyone to go out and explore whenever the opportunity presents itself... life is too short and work can be all consuming. For me there is no better feeling than taking out the map on a Friday afternoon, picking a spot and just going for it. We are so lucky to have WA's coastline and outback and access to most places is just the price of a coffee. Just like the harmonious tones of their plumage, the sweet fluting tones of the Tawny-crowned Honeyeater's song seem to blend in seamlessly with the muted healthland habitats they call home. We see them awfully frequently on our bird surveys across Ngarkat Conservation Park though – like many species – their abundance has fallen since surveys began almost 30 years ago. They use their long, decurved bills to feed on invertebrates and the abundant nectar resources the healthland provides from a diverse array of banksias, flame heaths, correas, beard heaths and grevilleas. Darting from shrub to shrub pursuing flying insects or defend their territory from rivals, it can be hard to see little more than a dull brown blur and appreciate the palette of caramels, creams, browns and blacks they are adorned with. Up close I think they are rather spectacular.

Take a look at all of those sharp edges, this is the last place you would want to fall down. This is precisely what happened to @thecampingvet when a freak wave came in and bowled her over causing multiple lacerations to her hands and legs. The same wave also sucked out my $2500 lens and Nisi filters into the ocean. We had been there for an hour and a half so we thought we had sussed out the wave patterns. It just goes to show you that you must be very vigilant when dealing with mother nature. I'm currently looking at replacing the lens with a Canon 16-35mm f2.8 III L or Sigma 14-24 f2.8 Art. Having said all of that WE HAD AN AMAZING TIME!!!!😁😁 . . . #justanotherdayinwa #australiascoralcoast #seeaustralia #australia #naturewelove #ausgeo #austtravellermag #amazing_wa #westisbest #waparkswildlife #australiassouthwest #nisifilters #lostinaustralia #canon #WAuncovered #living_australia #westernaustralia #exploringaustralia #aussiephotos #takemetoaustralia #unlimited_australia #australialovesyou #landdownwonder #LTDAustralia #natgeotravel #wow_australia2018 #perthshot #longexposure #ch9isok

Redwoods in California 🌲 Old growth forests are so important to the Planet. No amount of tree planting will ever replace the years of microcosms, that have been created. We need to preserve 50 percent of the planet, for Human survival, let alone all the other fauna and flora that the forests support. I read recently in an article in Scientific American. #tree_magic #oldforests #redwoods #naturewelove #natureperfection #bwphotography #treesofinstagram #travelandadventure #livelifeoutdoors #lifeisbetteroutdoors #preserve #ecology

The soft rose light reflecting off the islands, majestic green turtles gliding under my board, crystal clear water, enormous coral flowering and unfurling, zebra fish and giant sting rays. I nearly gave up on this sunset! The forecast promised moderate high altitude cloud and a possibility of a great sunset, but when I got to location all I saw was solid grey as far as the eye could see. The closer we got to sunset the darker the clouds got and the heavier the winds whipped past. Just as I was about ready to pack it in we noticed a faint glow from behind the Three Sisters. After about 10 minutes it looked as though a bushfire was coming over the mountain ridge, before slowly fading again. It was a sunset unlike any I had seen in the past, and I'm glad I stuck it out! ⛰️πŸŒ₯️⛰️ . . . #mynikonlife @NikonAustralia #mint_shotz @mint_shotz #marvelshots #awesome_photographers #worldprime @worldprime #hike_australia @hike_australia #naturewelove #ausgeo #focusaustralia #wow_australia2018 #australiagram #ig_australia #lifeofaustralia @lifeofaustralia #australia_shotz #ig_discover_australia #focusaustralia #exploringaustralia #newsouthwales @visitnsw #NSWParks @NSWParks #hikeaustralia @hikeaustralia #nswnationalparks @nswnationalparks #tourismnsw @tourismnsw #explore_bluemountains @explore_bluemountains #ScenicWorld_Aus #ig_bluemountains @ig_bluemountains #lostmtns #lonlyplanet, #exploreaustralia, #ausbestlocations, #takemetoaustralia
