You’ve heard it a million times, but it’s true that everyone has a story to tell. So when I wanted reassurance that storytelling through images was the direction I wanted to go, I took a workshop with an industry pro and someone I admire, @. Students were tasked with going out into the world (and by world I mean Palm Springs) and to find a subject to infiltrate their world for a short time. Peel back the layers and learn about them, because the better the relationship you develop with your subject, the better your images and the better the story. Not to mention the more you grow as a human being.
After pregaming my plan with Amy Gaskin (the worlds shining star of story producing), we decided that I was going to up my game and go out to the Salton Sea. A hot, dry, nearly empty town, but thriving with character human beings. There, I met Jack who saved my project from falling apart when my original subject was nowhere to be found come shooting day. What began as a day of following Jack the plumber around at work, turned into a day of meeting his lovely wife Stefani and his psychedelic home in the Bombay Beach. I learned about their family, the love they have for each other, and new relationship with the spirits who support their souls. Jack introduced me to his Tree of Life, which he painted and attached bibles to. And since moving to the Bombay Beach, he’s used his good heart and creative attributes to hold feasts at the BBAC. Cheers to two new friends, Stefani & Jack.
