In countries torn apart by conflict, millions of children are traumatised, living in fear and facing unimaginable hardship. Through child sponsorship, ActionAid’s local staff and partners provide direct support - including: - rechargeable lights and street lighting so girls don’t fear each nightfall, and to make early morning walks to school less dangerous - psychosocial services to help children overcome trauma and PTSD symptoms - and backpacks, pens and stationery supplies so children can go to school. #NoGirlAfraid #appeal #donate #education #school

In the occupied Palestinian territory, girls like nine-year-old Suzjoud are caught in the crossfire of war. When Suzjoud was seven she was attacked by men who threw rocks at her. Two years after being attacked, Suzjoud is still scared to walk even short distances from her home in Gaza. Thanks to the local ActionAid women’s group, Suzjoud's mum, Miriam, has now learned first aid – a lifeline for their family, since they live an hour from the closest hospital – and is working with other women to try and make the community safer for their children. #NoGirlAfraid #christmas #christmasappeal #children #girlsrights 📷 Alice Oldenburg/ActionAid"

Manal, 41, in her backyard with sheep given to her by ActionAid, in the West Bank, occupied Palestinian territory. As a result of the occupation, since 2004, the agricultural land that Manal and her husband rent has halved, significantly reducing her family's income. Manal is part of her local ActionAid Women's Group where she has received training on how to make different types of food stuffs and is now earning her own income making yoghurt, cheese and butter to sell at the market. 📷 Alice Oldenburg/ActionAid #NoGirlAfraid #Christmas #christmasappeal #sheep #cheese #sheepfarming #womensrights

Seven-year-old Mays enjoying putting rubbish in the new wheelie bin in her community in Gaza. Fumes from rubbish fires made it dangerous for Mays and her friends to play outside. But Mays' mum joined a local women's group funded by ActionAid, and together they lobbied the local government to provide bins and collections, so now Mays can play safely outside again. 📷 Alice Oldenburg/ActionAid #NoGirlAfraid #Christmasappeal #donate #girls #girlsrights #righttoplay #smile

Happy New Year! In 2017 we supported thousands of children living through conflict, like five-year-old Jannat from The West Bank. She was terrified of the soldiers who took her father away, but now, thanks to ActionAid support, she is in school and enjoying learning. She says: “I like learning. I like drawing. I like to draw flowers.” #NoGirlAfraid #Christmas #Christmasappeal #girlsrights #education #school #drawing #learning

Gradually, the streets stopped humming with the sound of motor cars and bustle of people. The buildings around became empty and broken. In a tent high above the city streets, on a hillside, Amala and her younger brothers huddled around candles and told each other stories. Day after day the children would stay close to the tent, not wanting to stray too close to the darkness. But a sorrow grew heavy in Amala’s heart, for she wished that she could venture further. She would look at the empty streets below and swore she could hear the city beckoning to her. One day, she saw her father with his head in his hands. They were down to their last loaf of bread. “What shall we do?” he said. Illustration by @hannahasenillustration To watch The Story of Hope, click on the link in our bio. #NoGirlAfraid
