There is a tenderness that shows up in yoga. As a survivor, it’s been an important part of my healing- a tangible way to be in my body. Over the 2 years of sharing practice with the Anti-Recidivism Coalition, I’ve seen how yoga can be healing intervention for institutional violence, interpersonal abuse and toxic masculinity. It is special to be at their annual winter retreat to connect and lead practice. We know that incarcerated people experience more violence and trauma inside, and what that means for the greater community impacted by the system that locks up family members and friends. It can not be underestimated how hard it is to connect with the tenderness to be kind, curious and open to what happens in our body. Here is hard work in breath and action.
