My all time favourite quote on life choices and direction comes, rather amusingly, from the light hearted, stoner comedy, Clerks 2.
"... he's the biggest pussy I ever met, the dude who lives his life according to everyone else's standards ... Jesus, if you had any sense whatsoever, you'd fucking stop trying to bray it up with the rest of the sheep and live your life the way it makes sense for you!"
How much do we let others opinions govern our actions? I know I have. And not just small things like what clothes I wear or car I drive; but huge things like attending university because it was what's 'expected' or quitting a job I loved because it wasn't viewed by society as a 'real job'.
Why do we let the thoughts of others, the vast majority of whom, have no impact on our lives, have such influence over us? How silly is it to let external influence control our actions and subsequently the way we spend our lives and our overall happiness.
After overcoming a struggle with suicidal depression over a number of years, my primary goal has always been just to be happy. Whatever way that comes and regardless of how the choices I make appear to others. As long as we are happy (and our happiness does not cause anyone else to suffer) then in my eyes the sole purpose for existence is being fulfilled. Money, status, looks, etc are all secondary.
Stop worrying about what other people think and live your life the way it makes sense for you!
