Despite the name, Southern Paprika don’t produce spices; they get their name because they’re in the Southern hemisphere (just outside of Warkworth, North Island), and the capsicums they produce are often called Paprika in the northern hemisphere.
SPL was founded to supply counter-seasonal capsicum to customers in Japan during the Northern Hemisphere winter. From there, they have grown substantially, and are now a large scale specialist in the capsicum market; you can see their products in markets across Japan, Australia, Canada, and of course New Zealand.
Since 1998 they have added glasshouses across three separate complexes, and currently have a total of 23 hectares of state of the art glasshouses, making Southern Paprika New Zealand's largest single site glasshouse grower of fresh, quality capsicums, producing almost 40 million capsicums per season. Here we see Charlie and Tongoii loading some up on the trolley, and there’s more where that came from!
