Photo of the day August 18, 2018. The Southern Black Racer (Coluber constrictor priapus) is one of the most common snakes in Florida. Here are some interesting facts about this cool snake, according to snake-removal.com: It is non-venomous, so those phobic about snakes don't need to worry if you see one. It is color blind, very fast moving (hence the name) and it can climb and swim like a pro. It can vibrate its tail in grass to create a sound like a rattlesnake, which is one of its defense mechanisms. It will chase and bite it's prey when it feels trapped, but it typically suffocates its prey by crushing it (1). It is a beneficial resident of gardens and yards because its prey are smaller animals and insects that destroy plants. So when you see one, just leave it alone, and it will be on its way.
