Our Māori word of the week is Ōtā Maikukuiti-Āhia / Asian small-clawed otter – for our romp of otterly adorable otters!
If we break it down further, Ōtā is the māori word for otter, maikuku is claw, iti means small and Āhia is Te Reo for Asia (which you may remember from our previous word of the week Arewhana-Āhia / Asian elephant).
The smallest of 13 otter species, we have two breeding pairs of these fast, clever, semi-aquatic mammals at our zoo and these guys are often found splashing in the river or devouring fish!
You can visit otter couple, Kanan and Takumi, in the enclosure they share next to another amazing South-east Asian species, our Sumatran tigers Berani and Molek.
Check out our full Māori word of the week playlist on our YouTube channel and use zoo-themed Te Reo with your family on your next zoo visit!
