Intresting time yesterday on the first day of mine and George's trip to snowdonia... After a 5hr drive (mostly in dry conditions) we arrived in the national park.... to ALOT of rain!
So not wanting to set up something ridiculous in the wet we picked a small two pitch crag on the road side. Without a clue on grades or route names we set off.
I set out as the lead and after 3 or 4 meters it was apparent that climbing roughly the grade of Severe, in the wet while wearing big mountaineering boots... maybe was going to be abit tricky.... and then I fell!
I fell several times trying to get the one last move onto the first ledge where we presumed we would belay from. So reluctantly I accepted defeat and handed over to George, who, with a bit more height than I have, sailed through the move!
Then we were off! George, instead of only climbing onto that next ledge, continued leading up and across the crag to a much higher but better suited belay stance where I then seconded upto. The moves he had done, wow, commiting to say the least!
We now switched again and I led the top pitch, a very slippary blank affair that in the dry would be a slab climbers dream.... well in the wet... it is was no 'dream pitch'. I bimbled up through the moves, achieving marginally acceptable gear placments and scratching around for handholds that didnt have a gorse-bush growing awkwardly out of them!
Holds found, I was now on the top. A quick 3 part anchor built and George was soon joining me on the top!
A walk off, trip to the bar and roadside cooking session found us tucked up in sleeping bags having planned the next few days. Let's hope that this weather passes soon!
