I can’t tell you how often soil has reminded me of brownie mix. After a day walking the Palouse, I told a friend I wanted to scoop a spoonful, it looked so luscious.
He was more practical. Said the soil’s true deliciousness comes from the billion bacteria in every teaspoon (not to mention all the fungal filaments, protozoa and nematodes). Said that we’re only beginning to understand the synergy of all those invisibles, but we do know that the ground under our feet is a responsive, wondrous gift, and how we treat it matters. Really matters.
