A year of hiking around the national parks makes a body strong. Or, lava rock is full of holes (shhh) #parksonwheels

It’s a Big Beach indeed. Farewell for now Maui! It’s been a blast and we can’t wait to come back. #parksonwheels

And here are my pacers. Wish I had some shots of them breaching but i could only justify so many stops along the race. 😆 #parksonwheels

1

Another race down! This may be my favorite so far, as a humpback whale and calf we’re my pacers for 2 miles, frolicking only 50 yards off the shore. Doesn’t say much for my speed but can’t think of a better running mate! @findingpeaceintheparks decided to run faster and placed first in his class. Also, nuclear-disaster-averted humor. Good times all around, thanks #maui! Woot! #parksonwheels

There wasn't, but we did. #parksonwheels

3

Waking up on a massive volcano is stressful enough, then this. And it took over 1/2 hour to find out someone pushed the wrong button. #parksonwheels

Moving over to the waterfall side of Maui for a week. Missing my beaches, but just barely :) #parksonwheels

This was one insane cloud formation off Mt Hood. Inverted fog formation? High winds? Who knows but #nofilterneeded #parksonwheels

4

parksonwheels

Miles and miles of sand dunes. On the Oregon coast. What unexpected windswept loveliness. #parksonwheels

Favorite thing about Hearst Castle. The man would only entertain surrounded by priceless European tapestries and under antique Renaissance oak ceilings in a castle on top of some of California’s most beautiful coastline. But there must be ketchup and mustard on the table at all meals, cause that’s how he’s keeping it real with his childhood love for camping. #parksonwheels

Sometimes trees are just too cool. #parksonwheels

A glorious month in Utah in a second a day. Capitol Reef, Bryce, Zion, Canyonlands, and Arches...30 Days wasn’t enough! #parksonwheels #1seme #1secondeveryday

A Beijing Airpocalypse sunset off the coast of Santa Barbara. Worlds colliding. Our best to the firefighters in SoCal that are fighting those tremendous fires. #parksonwheels

The seals of San Diego are adorable #parksonwheels

4

Canyonlands is amazing, and getting off-road via White Rim Road is even better. Even with 50mph winds threatening to blow me off the plateau. #tbt #parksonwheels

3

parksonwheels

Hello sunny San Diego! #parksonwheels

3

parksonwheels

And all too quickly, we’ve spent 10 months on the road and seen all the National Parks in the lower 48. Thanks #47! Farewell Arches! #parksonwheels

The last of our “can’t find a bad camping spot in Utah” series. We’ve been in Utah for the last month and it’s been a wonderland of colors and geological mysteries. Living at the edge of the deep canyons of Canyonlands has been the perfect end to the month. #parksonwheels

5

findingpeaceintheparks

The Colorado Plateau has to be one of the most strange and wonderful places in the world. #parksonwheels

3

Another view of the magical sunset at Canyonlands. Island in the Sky is a pretty amazing island. Glad we changed our plans to spend another week perched up here :) #parksonwheels

1

Canyonlands at dusk. A lot to be grateful for this Thanksgiving and this year. #parksonwheels

2

It was great to have family with us for our final two parks in the Lower 48. Just Alaska and Hawaii left! #parksonwheels

Nephew's first slot canyon. #parksonwheels

1

parksonwheels

The views never cease to amaze. Especially when the roads were shut to cars (Thanksgiving traffic jam!) and you had to bike and hike up up up through Zion Canyon and towards Angel’s Landing. Working up a sweat always makes the views better, doesn’t it? #parksonwheels #happythanksgiving

4

parksonwheels

When there aren’t blue skies and clouds roll in, you can be grateful for the most amazing sunset they create. #parksonwheels

The Watchman, at dusk. Am I posting too many pictures of Zion?? It can’t be helped, really. Too pretty. #parksonwheels

Zion in the first stages of winter... leaves bright yellow and a storm brewing #parksonwheels

Oh yeah, I was there too! Seriously though, are we or aren’t we rocking those waders? #parksonwheels #whoneedsrealgearwhenyouhavewaders

Training for my next half-marathon doesn’t hurt so bad when this is the running track. #parksonwheels #zionisawesome

2

Did I mention how there are no bad campsites in Utah?? #parksonwheels #zion

2

parksonwheels

First time hiking in waders... but waist deep waters and frozen fingers were worth the views in the Narrows #parksonwheels

The Emerald Pools are more like a painting of a landscape than a real place. #parksonwheels

Hello Zion #parksonwheels

1

Not a bad spot for our tiny house. Zion has lived up to its reputation so far. #parksonwheels

4

Is this place for real??? I’ve never been to Greece but have a feeling this natural temple has the man-made ones all beat. The insane clouds only add to the majesty. #parksonwheels

8

parksonwheels

Bryce Canyon gets even more beautiful when you take a bit of time to hike the lesser-traveled paths. #parksonwheels

5

findingpeaceintheparks

I think our rig is jealous of the homesteaders who got to live here. #parksonwheels

2

findingpeaceintheparks

Can't get to Greece? Come to Utah to see nature's acropolis. #parksonwheels

3

parksonwheels

The hoodoos of Bryce. Wandering around them all day, but still not tired of the views and the sunset glows. #parksonwheels

3

parksonwheels

There’s something fun and neighborly when the only two campers in a beautiful empty campground are Airstreams. Granted, the 70s vintage trailer has way more street cred, but I still love our Grey Whale best. 😉 #parksonwheels #airstream @airstream_inc

Someone’s gotta hold up those trees! #parksonwheels #hoodoos

1

John Muir said Yosemite was Nature's cathedral but I don't know, Bryce Canyon might have something to say about that. #parksonwheels

2

It's not easy to take pictures of Bryce Canyon, so I decided to hide it behind this tree. #parksonwheels

1

parksonwheels

The magic of Capitol Reef. Never heard of a monocline before, and after hiking up and up them for several days, gotta say I’m in love... #parksonwheels

5

parksonwheels

Seriously can’t find a bad campsite in Utah. #parksonwheels

1

parksonwheels

Making our way down the Grand Staircase in Southern Utah and finding it more than a little amazing. Tackling these parks from north to south had the unintended effect of allowing us to experience the geological forces and layers that created the magic of the parks of the Colorado plateau. #parksonwheels

2

parksonwheels

I think I’m going to like living in Utah. Tragic that we missed the free fruit picking at the aptly named Fruita by a few weeks. There’s always next year! #parksonwheels

3

The wonders of a snowy hike at Great Basin... seeing a bristlecone pine over 3500 years old and still growing strong, Wheeler Peak rising over the Nevada desert, and the most amazing line of aspen, pine, and frosted trees at the top of the mountain range. Yes, it was freezing, and yes, it was worth it. #parksonwheels

2

findingpeaceintheparks

First impressions of Capitol Reef are good. #parksonwheels

3

parksonwheels

In October, we saw the glories of California’s big trees and national parks. From the Redwoods to Lassen, Yosemite to Sequoia and then Kings Canyon, we marveled at trees and granite and bears. And of course, snuck in some dim sum with family. #parksonwheels #1seme

4

1

Death Valley was our first return visit this year in the Parks, and we discovered even more to love about this magical place. Who knew it could get better? #parksonwheels

1

findingpeaceintheparks

Jen learning how to windmill your arms to keep your fingers warm. Those bristlecone pines behind us have been living there for up to 5000 years and we barely made it one snowy day. #parksonwheels

3

One of the nice things about getting off Facebook and driving the country yourself is that you don't have to worry if the Russians are manipulating what you're seeing for political gain. #parksonwheels

1

parksonwheels

We finally made it to the Racetrack! Death Valley has some pretty otherworldly sights, but being in Death Valley and seeing these mysterious rocks that seem to move across the plain on their own, leaving just their tracks, was an appropriate way to pass Halloween. #parksonwheels

3

findingpeaceintheparks

A day at the races. We stopped over at Death Valley on the way to Great Basin because we had some unfinished business there: a 200 mile off-road adventure to the Racetrack (and beyond) that rain had foiled our last time here. It didn't disappoint. #parksonwheels

6

And... to cap off a great week, we got to marvel at the world’s biggest living thing, the General Sherman sequoia. Fun fact: it’s 1,385 TONS...and started as a seedling when Cleopatra was still queen of Egypt. #parksonwheels

40 National Parks DONE!!! That means we only have 10 parks to go to hit our goal of 50 National Parks in 50 weeks. We’ve done a full circle around the US, and put almost 40,000 miles on our truck - what a crazy amazing time so far.. Visit us on our blog at www.parkonwheels.com #parksonwheels
