Oh Ethan. A man after my own heart. He was recently profiled in the New York Times for his latest film, @firstreformedmovie. In which he was given the best written and most favorable treatment I've read of any actor in forever. But it was wasn't just sentimental icing. It was too well written by Taffy Brodesser-Akner, and too self aware to be a puff piece. It was, to my discernment, Capital "T" True in the sense of being true to Ethan's convictions and career, even as it was a love letter to the idea of the artist and Ethan himself. Akner even calls our attention to what close readers couldn't help but notice, how on the nose the piece was about the "artist." Tell me if you spot it after you read it. And you totally should! Oh The romance of the art and the artist. I really do get it. I'm just wary of the mirage. In any event, I'm writing this thing touching on the subject. Of course I mention the Hawke and his "art!" And the love letter in the Times. And here he is performing the role true to his form. Gotta love This guy.
