I looked at the photos, read the words and my heart shred into a million pieces over and over again.
Animal cruelty is not limited by age, race, gender, ethnicity, economic or geographic boundaries. Acts of animal cruelty can and do happen everywhere and the extent to which they are inflicted are beyond your worst nightmares.
For those who suffer these acts, existence is a hell from which there is no reprieve.
So many of us have cried, screamed, and pumped our fists in rage at the recent story of Cargo the dog; words do not exist to adequately describe the horrors she must have endured and the depravity of the humans who purposely and with malicious intent abused her body, took her life and her soul.
We cannot change what happened but we can and must work harder to end the violence for all.
We need to stop asking how people can be so cruel, rather we need to understand the fact that that there is a very real, present and dangerous subset of the population who actively pursue and engage in increasingly horrific acts of animal cruelty and violence toward all things living.
Each and every one of us has a responsibility to protect the innocent - to stand up, speak out, and hold others accountable.
So what can you do? - be present and informed about your public officials, do not vote for those who are lose on these crimes - petition for positive legislative change and speak up when legal rulings fail the innocent - be active in your local shelter or rescue: research practices, be informed about their treatment of the animals, adoption policies and steps, and follow up - learn how to spot the warning signs of cruelty and SPEAK UP when you see something suspicious or of concern - educate others about all of the above
