Today was a gorgeous day for my last visit with my man 💥FLASH💥 before hitting the road for two months of travels. Flash is nearly 17 years old so, as you might imagine, parting ways with him today felt bittersweet. Grateful to have KCC Team Member Ann to care for Flash in my absence! 🙏🏻 Does anyone know what this beautiful flowering tree is called? That violet color, though! I think I freaked out some tourists when I stopped everything while walking down south Congress today to marvel at the lovely little Scilla peruviana planting at Hotel San José. I stopped to look at a plant and they stopped to look at me 😂 I love the landscaping at this property, they have walls covered in fig ivy and jasmine, if I ever get a chance I want to stay here just to appreciate the garden spaces. It’s still rainy and chilly but Spring is underway in spite of the weather and I’m continuing on with my perpetually-amusing plant ID adventure. #keepingaustinweird #youreturningvioletviolet #uncloudyday #rainraingoaway #plantgeek #funtimes #touristtown #andnowformynexttrick #plantid #southcongress #amazinglandscape #hotelsanjose #creepingfig #jasmine #scilla #peruviana #floweringbulbs #springishere #austintx #everydayadventures #alwaysamused #smartyplants

Please help!! What is this plant? 🤔🌿 I've been trying to ID this plant ever since my Dad's girlfriend gave me a cutting that she took back to the UK from Portugal. (Swipe for more images, the last image is my Dad's girlfriend's plant & me! 🤗) So, I'm certain it's in the Tradescantia family as it grows very rapidly. The leaves are glossy, with no hair apart from at root nodes. Leaf undersides are purple and it has no veragation to speak of.. apart from very faint lines that get more silvery with age but don't react to light changes (that I've noted). Sorry, i couldn't capture a great picture of that as it's so faint. It seems to be happy in most light conditions apart from direct light and I have mine in indirect/shaded conditions. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, my research has been fruitless so far 🙁🌿 P.s if anyone in the UK would like a cutting, let me know.. this guy needs a trim soon ✂😄 #houseplantclub #tradescantia #house_plant_community #urbanjunglebloggers #urbanjungle #plantid #whatplantisthis #houseplantsofinstagram #plantlady #crazyplantlady #plantstagram #plantphotography #plantlove #plantpeople #plantlovers #plantmom #botanical #therealhouseplantsofinstagram #plantpots #plantcuttings #foliagefriday

It’s always the best when you catch your favorite plants at different seasons. California native plants are beautiful throughout all seasons and each have their own unique charm. It’s important to recognize plants at different seasons and different growth stages. Umbelluaria californica (California Bay laurel) is in bloom! I don’t know if it’s because of the blooming flowers but the sweet fragrance was more prolific, and I LOVED it. The sharp contrast between the dark forest green and sunshine yellow flowers really makes a statement and it’s definitely a visual your eyes wont forget. The beauty of CA Bay laurel is hard to ignore. It’s hardy, handsome, and beautiful. California Bay laurel has the power to make someone stop just to admire its beauty. It’s one of those natives that are common but the commonality reinforces how spectacular California native plants really are.

Epilobium hirsutum. Great Willowherb / Zottiges Weidenröschen 🌿 Found growing in the damp soils of mashlands, streambanks, ditches, and woodland edges, it is native from Northern Africa throughout central Europe. The foliage is an important food source for the catepillars of many native moths and butterflies, and in autumn the long seed pods spring open into a distinctive star-shape, releasing the satiny seeds to the wind. An important identifying characteristic is the matching star-shaped stigma. Gesammelt: 17 Juli 2017.

This is the Platycerium grande, a magnificent Australian Staghorn. This was only a small fern when I was young, but I have watched it grow into this giant 30 year old specimen. Congrats to my dad who has been caring for it the entire time! 😁 The Staghorn fern is an epiphytic meaning that it grows on the branches of tree canopies or on fallen logs. Staghorn ferns develop deeply lobed sterile leaves, and basket shaped nest leaves that catch falling debris. This one has always been happing feeding on the falling leaves of the jacaranda tree. Then nest leaves are green and very hairy when young, and grow tightly against the host. As the plant matures, the fertile antler fronds start to grow. The antlers are the true leaves of the fern. These hang downwards and are narrow and forked from less than half way down the leaf stem. The antler-like fronds have spores in a large mass at the base of the first fork, and these become brown and fluffy when mature. The old, dead fronds remain on the plant and help to fix the plant to its support and catch fallen leaves. They create their own compost from material caught in the fronds. Amazing recyclers! 🍃 #thecheekygardener #Platyceriumgrande #staghorn #epiphytic #fern #staghornfern #australia #nativeplant #native #recycle #debris #huge #mountlawley #greenthumb #growsomethinggreen #indoorgardening #indoorplanthelp #plantid #houseplanthelp #houseplant #indoorplantsdecor

Generally, I tell my students that red maples are the chameleon of the forest when it comes to bark. But when you come across a tree with this characteristic bull’s-eye pattern you know you have a red maple. This Bullseye is the result of a perennial target canker, each year while the tree is dormant the canker attacks, then once the maple starts growing in the spring it heals over and produces a layer of callus. When the tree goes dormant again the canker begins to grow again. This leads to these concentric rings of callus which become visible as a bull’s-eye on the bark. Not all red maples have target cankers, But I’ve never seen another species of tree with this particular pattern from a canker. So if you see it, it’s a good winter identification feature. #acerrubrum #redmaple #sapindaceae #connecticutforests #forestecology #dendrology #plantid

. p i n k . . My husband got home yesterday with these branches cuttings for me 😍❤️ it's gorgeous! . I have no idea how to propagate them, but I'm trying. It's called Alternanthera dentata "Brazilian Red Hot", love it! . So far I've only propagated vines, or stem cuttings, never a plant with such a hard branch... So, completely unexplored waters here. . After washing, I put the endings of the branches in water and they still are there, I hope this works. . Do you have any tips, suggestions, experience on this?

Blue Vervain is a favorite forage plant for many of our native butterfly species. Butterflies are attracted to the ultraviolet color (similar to the effect of Liatris, Coneflower and Monarda). Used medicinally throughout history, the name 'Verbena' is latin for "Sacred Plant" (I think our pollinators would agree). #WildflowerWednesday 💜 💜 💜 #TheWildflowerProject #TWP #plantingwithapurpose #verbena #bluevervain #nativeplants #prairie #prairieplants #wildflower #wildflowers #plantID #pollinator #pollinators #pollination #savethebees #savethebutterflies #savethepollinators #Minnesota #Minnesotaprairies #habitat #habitatrestoration #photography #plantphotography #flowerphotography

This next orchid isn't all that attractive on its own but its ability to occur in large dense colonies of hundreds of plants makes it a lot more fun to look at. The odd northern tubercled orchid (Platanthera flava var. herbiola) is a species that occurs in a variety of wet situations and can withstand deep shade. Its succulent, fleshy leaves and stems arise from the highly organic black muck of its swamp woods home at this site under a mature canopy of swamp white/bur/pin oaks, green/pumpkin ash, American elm, red maple and cottonwood. The orchids are so dense at this spot that few other plants grow among them, with those that do largely being marsh marigold (Caltha palustris) and the critically imperiled heart-leaved plantain (Plantago cordata). This site goes through boom and bust years in regards to how many plants flower, with 2016 being an exceptionally nice and photogenic summer and when I snapped this photo. #TributeToWildOrchids #Nature #NatureGram #NatureLovers #NaturePhotography #PlantsOfInstagram #PlantID #InstaNature #InstaOrchid #IGNature #InstaBotany #InstaFlower #Botany #Wildflower #Summer #Orchid #WildOrchid #Orchidaceae #Platanthera #Swamp #Wetland #Ecology #Ohio #OhioBotany #OhioOrchids #OhioWildflowers #TheBuckeyeBotanist #ALGibson

I've been fortunate to have seen 80+ species of North America's wild orchids in the 9-10 years I've been chasing them. However, we all have to start somewhere and the first one I ever saw in bloom was the showy orchis (Galearis spectabilis). I remember that early May afternoon nearly a decade ago like it was yesterday. I was hiking a mature mixed mesophytic forest down in my area when I came across a stately yellow buckeye I had to admire, as I was very into trees (and still am) back then. I then noticed a handful of pairs of large, glossy basal leaves topped with stalks of pink/white flowers. I kneeled down and inspected them for a minute knowing they were something very special and unique. I quickly IDed them as showy orchis from my wildflower guide that I never left home without back then. I don't know what it was about that experience but right then and there I was hooked. Flash forward to now and I still get giddy seeing this old friend each spring in some of my favorite haunts. Be sure to give them a whiff, too! Their aroma is simply exquisite! #TributeToWildOrchids #Nature #NatureGram #NatureLovers #NaturePhotography #IGNature #InstaNature #InstaPlant #PlantsOfInstagram #InstaOrchid #PlantID #PlantPorn #Wildflower #Orchid #Orchidaceae #Galearis #ShowyOrchis #Ecology #Mesophytic #Biodiversity #Woodland #Botany #Ohio #OhioOrchids #OhioNature #OhioWildflowers #ALGibson #TheBuckeyeBotanist

Keeping on with my #TributeToWildOrchids is a taxon that is sure to impress in the crested coralroot (Hexalectris spicata). It looks like something better found in a tropical botanical gardens but is right at home in the upland mixed oak woodlands and cedar barren margins of extreme southern Ohio. Each flower is about the size of a quarter with an appearance of molded clay. The colorful explosion of magenta on its lip is most exceptional. This species lacks chlorophyll and thus doesn't photosynthesize, instead gaining all nutrients through its symbiotic relationship with subterranean mycorrhizal fungi. Each plant only surfaces perhaps once or twice a decade to flower and set seed; I've checked the exact same spot for plants first seen in July 2008 each summer since and those plants have yet to break their dormancy. Patience. #Nature #NatureGram #NaturePhotography #NatureLovers #InstaOrchids #InstaNature #InstaFlower #InstaBotany #PlantsOfInstagram #IGNature #PlantID #Botany #Botanizing #Wildflower #Orchid #Orchidaceae #Hexalectris #CrestedCoralroot #Coralroot #NativeFlora #OakWoods #Ecology #Ohio #OhioBotany #OhioNature #OhioOrchids #ExploreOhio #TheBuckeyeBotanist #ALGibson

This is Jane. I call her that because I don't actually know what she is. Jane was left behind in my apartment by the previous occupant. She was more purple coloured in the summer, but is now a blue green. Jane has a soft powder on her leaves, which I used to think was dust but have since learned is a succulent's natural sunscreen (sorry, Jane!). Previous neglect had made Jane quite leggy, so I've beheaded her and gotten rid of damaged leaves. Primula hendersonii. Shooting Star. In the Primulaceae family. This is one of the early bloomers and makes its presence known with its intoxicating pinkness. Primula is one of those species that looks like it belongs in a garden due to its commercial charm. Seeing this beauty in its native habitat is more rewarding because you can truly see the beauty and resistance of native plants. Even more, the leaves and roots are edible when boiled but are poisonous raw. Its nice to know whether a species is edible because you get a peak at the plant’s history. Primula hendersonii can be confused with Primula clevelandii but you can tell them apart by their leaves and stems. P. hendersonii’s stems are a lot more purple in apperance where as P. clevelandii’s stem are more green.  This shooting star is definitely an eye catcher and will leave you under a spell. You’ll never forget a Primula once you meet one.
