Bergenia cordifolia (Saxifragaceae). Exotic and planted. First flowering 1/16.
I loved my mom’s beds of Bergenia. In dry California, she watered them, and they always looked healthy and moist. Our cats used to lie in them, probably because, their large leaves would have had high transpiration rates to avoid overheating, thus making cool beds for kitties. Along with mom’s Heucheras (coral bells), these were my first Saxifragaceaes, a family I later grew to love in arctic and alpine zones. So of course we planted Bergenia in our cabin garden at the cabin! I balanced it with rhubarb (which also has large rounded leaves) on the other side of the garden.
