I love my little foragers.
This is a photo from late spring last year.
Most of you probably know I’m a mama, I post about my little men often. I’ve been getting questions lately about what I ‘do’, what my educational background is and where I’m located—so, I thought I’d chat about it!
I live in Washington state, in the Columbia River Gorge—right on the border of OR and WA.
What is my formal educational background concerning Mycology? None. I do not have a scientific background when it comes to fungi. How did I ‘self teach’ myself? Lots of reading, online research and thousands of hours on the forest floor. Also, connecting with others who are passionate about fungi—you can’t go wrong in joining a Mycology club! Am I self conscious about not having a degree related to Mycology? (Okay, nobody asks that, but...) Yes, I am. I want to know more, understand more and speak more eloquently of the complexities of the Fungi Kingdom…and sometimes I worry people will expect something from me that I can’t deliver on because of my ‘self taught’ education. BUT—I am happy with what I’ve learned, with who I am…a forager, mama, educator…I know I teach passionately and that satisfies me despite some insecurities.
So what do you DO? Is this what you do?? “This” as in teaching, lecturing, leading forays and foraging, yes, that is what I ‘do’ and I have a very part time job as well. But ultimately I want the mushroom thing to be the only thing. My vision is to be able to continue to spread mushroom love and do it full time—it’s undoubtably the challenge of a lifetime to try and build a business with two little dudes, but ultimately this is what will create the best life for me and my boys, plus I LOVE doing it! Any other questions?
Oh and one last thing…I’m very thankful for this mushroom loving community online-I’ve never been a ‘social media’ type of a person, and to think I’ve found friends and learned so much from this little group of funny fungi lovers, it’s humbling and makes me a little teary eyed happy from time to time.
Cheers my Mushroom Friends!
