There’s a misconception that just because the few left populists who’ve made it into Congress as Democrats are women and non-white, that racial minorities as a whole are fiscal liberals who back idealistic candidates. The opposite is actually true if their voting record is put into consideration: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez—famous “democratic socialist”—actually lost the black vote in her district primary by over 60% (Slide 2), and won mostly because of turnout among white gentrifiers; similarly, Rashida Tlaib won her primary with only 12% of the black vote (Slide 3). Both are in minority-majority districts, yet have failed to win the non-white demographic. But then again, the vast majority (92%) of “progressive activists” are white so them powering leftist challengers isn’t surprising (Slide 10). In the election for mayor of San Francisco: London Breed—the establishment moderate—almost lost her primary against two left populists because of energetic young whites (Slide 6). To conclude these primary records, as well as others including Gubernatorial primary battle between Andrew Cuomo and Cynthia Nixon (Slide 4), DNC presidential primary between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, as well as gubernatorial primary between JB Pritzker and Daniel Biss (Slide 5); all left populist or left leaning candidates have lost the black vote by a significant margin within their primaries, which poses a consistency that minorities—especially blacks—who make up a core part of the DNC’s base aren’t with the fiscal left but are rather with the more moderate establishment.
The explanation to this—according to interviews in SC among black voters during the DNC primaries—is because minorities tend to prefer candidates who are pragmatic/holds most realistic agenda and are likely to win the general election (Slide 8). To add insult to injury: Minorities also tend to be less liberal than their white Democrat counterparts; most blacks actually identify as moderate or conservative (Slide 9) which contrasts significantly to white Democratic voters. So don’t assume the populist left is powered by minorities (even if the leftists are minority), that credit goes to young whites. Any thoughts?
