This is Harper. While having the raddest hair west of the Mississippi, she is not a fan of random people copping a feel of said hair.
Can I ask you all a favor? Please, PLEASE when you see a dog you don’t know and you want to pet them, do NOT reach over their head to pet, especially if they aren’t moving towards you. It’s the equivalent of someone playing tonsil hockey with someone they just met, instead of you know, shaking hands and respecting their space.
Why is this SO important? Because so many dogs are like Harper. So many dogs do NOT trust a random person lurking over them, despite that person is a “dog person.” And the saddest thing is we punish the dog for showing their lack of comfort, fear, horror, etc. It’s truly insane if you think about it.
So the next time you see an unknown dog whose owner is allowing you to say hello, let the dog come to you, and if they don’t, don’t force that greeting. Even if they do come towards you, ease into that hello, but letting the dog sniff and if s/he allows petting, start UNDERNEATH (and by not reaching toward) the head. Harper, and all dogs like her, thank you in advance. #doggiePSA #dontbethatguy #themoreyouknow🌈 🐶
