“TRADE SECRETS when BUILDING YOUR PORTFOLIO” Up-and-coming models ask me often about tests shoots while building their book. “I can’t afford a stylist. What should I wear for my first shoot ?” - I always go for classic simple yet cool, same goes to posing. You really don’t want to overdo it. They also send me their brand new images or styling choices to evaluate “can I show these at an open call?” ..and usually I see over photoshopped, over made up, over posed and over styled. Friends, If anything .. I’d say .. go for UNDER posed, UNDER made up, styled, photoshopped look.
1. I went to one of the basic inexpensive stores to get this outfit (plus 2 others with jeans and t+ cool jacket) - bought them OFF the mannequin (they are already styled by a professional) - this is a good secret and you should use it if you are building your modeling book. DO not take the tags off these cloths .. you will return them after your shoot.
2. Makeup, for your first shoot especially.. You can wear some tinted moisturizer or little concealer, and MINIMAL mascara. If any! Shots you guys usually send me with all the lips and eyes done up .. can’t be your first images unless a fantastic industry team worked to get you those.. 3. poses. JUST chill. But keep your spine tall to make your outfit look good. Be ALWAYS aware of your clothes. I developed an OCD because of this job. Showing smooth lines, folds and delicate details of the outfits is now your focus.. not “me me me!!! “. Modeling is actually not as vein as it can be perceived. You are here to make everyone look good. Be aware of the light - how it hits your clothes, your body.. and ugh .. be hyper aware of your hands! Yet look chill ... easy?
4. Be present and connected. New models often go into Model mayhem mode, a magic unicorn land .. it’s fun but not for your first portfolio shots. You want to be extra present with each camera move - even when you are looking away
5. shoot with photographers that minimally photoshop. Clients want to see the real YOU. And guess what - Real skin texture is wanted.Yeah with all your pretty spots and marks and scars.
Hope this helps. Pic @ryanmichaelkelly
