I finished reading this gem today, Swede Hollow by Ola Larsmo. The book tells the story of the poorest of poor swedes who migrated from Sweden to the USA during the end of the 1800s. The characters are rich and the story is part fiction, part documentary. The book describes the characters’ daily lives and struggles. With an emphasis on the latter. Because poverty means struggle or even complete hopelessness and despair. Yet, things slowly slowly got better, and the generations became more prosperous. (Eyyy a reference to Hans Rosling’s book Factfulness! Small changes accumulate to a big change!) I can assure you it’s more interesting than it sounds. I even cried several times. Fuck poverty. I highly recommend reading it. It’s such a recent chapter in our history.
