Today is Monday, and we want to share about Benzyl Alcohol!
What is it?
Benzyl alcohol is a colorless liquid that is used most commonly in food, cosmetics and personal care products as preservatives, fragrance ingredients, and solvents (used to dissolve other ingredients to make a formula feel more ‘smooth’). They are found in products from soaps and skin care products to makeup and detergents.
How is it harmful?
Benzyl alcohol is one of the lower molecular weight “alcohols” in cosmetics (AKA bad for skin alcohols), which when incorporated in formulas can cause the skin to be more dry and sensitizing rather than hydrating.
The European Union has limited the use of benzyl alcohol to a maximum of 1% concentration in cosmetics primarily because studies have shown that benzyl alcohol can cause allergic reactions. ⠀⠀
Are there any restrictions?
USA FDA does not have a restriction on benzyl alcohols. The EU has an upper limit of 1% concentration and Health Canada has a limitation of 5 milligrams per day relative to body weight. ⠀⠀
