, or literally "bringer of death; murder". She is a maiden who is abducted in to the underworld (symbolic of material existence). Her Divine Mother weeps for her, scouring the lands. She is eventually freed by Hermes, giving Zeus' decree. However she has eaten a pomegranate seed in her hunger while captive, and is bound by law to return to the Underworld as Hades' Queen for half of the year. Symbolically, Persephone is the part of the Soul that incarnates (the maiden, abducted to the underworld), where her tasting of the fruits of that world cause her to repeatedly return (consciousness has been conditioned by the sensory experience, generating Karma and sustaining samsara). Yet, she has a foot in two worlds, so to speak, and her death to one realm, is a birth in the other.
