It was a Rare Snow Day in Joshua Tree. The weather was dramatic, and so is this government shutdown. Our national parks need to be maintained and protected! Who is with me?

One of my favorite qualities of nature is it's explicable ability to make me feel small. The clusters of giant sequoias that surround the many meadows of Sequoia National Park tower above everything, leaving one constantly gazing up. . . • • • • • #vsco #wanderlust #canon70d #canonphotography #canonphoto #creativemagazine #thehhub #havecamerawilltravel #bleachmyfilm #readyforanotheradventure #thecabinchronicles #awakethesoul #321portrait #visualauthority #liveauthentic #protectourparks #protectourpubliclands #seqouia #sequoianationalpark #optoutside

PSA: please read, share, & tag 💖 We need your help. With the government shut down, our parks unprotected! We need your help to monitor our national treasures until the government reopens! . Please remember: 1) That those working who are in the National Parks today are without pay and without the promise of back pay. They are trying to keep visitors and resources safe. 2) If there are concessions employees they will most likely not have the answers to all your questions. 3) If you plan to visit the parks during the shutdown, or your friends or loved ones do, please have alternative ways to dispose of trash and human waste in case trash cans are full and bathrooms are locked. 4) Please be respectful of others in campgrounds who have reservations that are not being honored. Please plan ahead so that you will know how to enjoy and respect the resource without feedback from rangers. 5) It is our right to respectfully document any resource degradation or other actions in this lapse. 6) Parks are open free, but this will leave them open to destruction and vandalism. There are very few rangers working to protect the lands. 7) If you see someone destroying the park please attempt to report it, take pictures, and document the situation. #protectourpubliclands

The McCloud is said to have had a very prolific salmon and summer steelhead run back in the day. What a shame that humans interfered and ruined a cycle of life that was around for ages. It is sad that one or two generations chose the fate of these wild runs for the rest of us. I’m not trying to blame or point fingers because the dams and reservoirs that were created help bring life all throughout the valley, but the decisions that are made about our waters and public lands effect the next generations. I wish I could have seen this river back in its prime. I wonder what things we see now that our children and grandchildren will only hear the stories of. #foodforthought | #stewardtheearth | #mccloudriver | #northerncalifornia | #protectourpubliclands | #protectourwater

Yosemite seems to have been sending me off tonight. The past 8 months have been a great time of growth. I feel privileged to have worked with such a great group of people who care deeply about our public lands, the animals, plants, and temporary (or past) people that have lived and visited here. See you all in May. #nofilter #protectourpubliclands

Who’s marching tomorrow?!! If any of these points resonate with you, then join me and millions of others tomorrow for the Women’s March! Ps. Just because it’s called the Women’s March doesn’t mean men aren’t welcome to come show their support as well. These issues affect EVERYONE. “We cannot walk alone. And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead. We cannot turn back.” MLK We believe that Women’s Rights are Human Rights... Gender Justice is Racial Justice is Economic Justice... We have the right to live full and healthy lives, free of all forms of violence against our bodies... we will work for a day when all forms of violence against women are eliminated... We believe in Gender Justice. We must have the power to control our bodies and be free from gender norms, expectations, and stereotypes... We fully declare that LBGTQIA Rights are Human Rights and that it is our obligation to uplift, expand, and protect [these] rights... We believe in equal pay for equal work and the right of all women to be paid equitably... We recognize that women of color and Indigenous women carry the heaviest burden in the global and domestic economic landscape... We believe it is time for an all-inclusive Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Most Americans believe the Constitution guarantees equal rights, but it does not. The 14th Amendment has been undermined by the courts and cannot produce real equality on the basis of race and/or sex... We believe that all workers - including domestic and farm workers - must have the right to organize and fight for a living minimum wage... We believe that Civil Rights are our birthright... We support Indigenous women’s rights to access, own, develop, and control land and its resources... We reject mass deportation, family detention, violations of due process... We believe migration is a human right and that no human being is illegal. We believe that every person, every community and Indigenous people’s in our nation have the right to clean water, clean air, and access to and enjoyment of public lands. We believe that our environment and our climate must be protected, and t

Learn what makes Bears Ears National Monument so special by tuning into @rocktheparkabc with Colton @coltondsmith and Jack @jackfsteward this weekend. Rock the Park always inspires us to go explore! ••••• Thanks Colton @coltondsmith for sharing this important story. ------ - PLEASE READ 💥 This weekend our Bears Ears National Monument episode will air on @rocktheparkabc on ABC. It was an honor to film this incredible desert landscape and walk on ground that is held as sacred by so many Native American Tribes. The combination of beauty, history and spirituality I found at Bears Ears is unlike anything I’ve experienced before. Bears Ears is a story that to many has been in the making for the past 4,000 years, it’s a story that needs to be heard, shared and protected. We all have a right to have our voices heard and when others have their voices suppressed it’s our responsibility to raise ours for them. . . Since we filmed this episode the decision was made to reduce the size of Bears Ears significantly. I can’t promise that everything shown in our episode still falls under protection. After watching this, that shouldn’t sit well with you- infact that should flat out anger you. It’s never to late though to raise your voice. So share it, spread it and tell as many as you can that Bears Ears needs our help and we must do everything we can to protect it. Go to bearsearscoalition.org to take action! ------- #nationalparkgeek #FYPyes #nps #nationalpark #nationalparks #americasbestidea #findyourpark #goparks #nationalparkfoundation #everykidinapark #nature #naturelovers #npca #nationalparktrust #protectourpubliclands #climatechangeisreal #monumentalmistake #savebearsears #bearsears

Geeking out on a huge pile of clay. 😍 Ok, ok, it's more than that. Standing here, looking at the vivid reds, golds, whites, and blacks that make up the Painted Hills, is truly a spectacular sight. The reds, remnants of an ancient redwood forest, the gold, evidence of a more tropical climate, the white, proof of a sudden volcanic eruption and ash, and the black is thought to be manganese, anchored tight in the soil by an ancient rooted plant along the edges of a riverbed. So there you have it... 30 to 45 million years of the history of this land, color-coded for our enjoyment and understanding. This area is also an archeological gem of fossils, especially of plants and vertebrates. Could you imagine uncovering ancient three toed horses? Or dog-like, huge pig-like, weird clawed sheep-like creatures? Or seeing false saber tooth cats, here? Whoa. Beyond thankful for the early protections of soldiers and geologists to this area, who urged the state of Oregon to protect this geographic location after realizing its significance. In 1975, the state transferred the land to our federal government and the John Day National Monument was born. The diversity of Oregon has blown me away and Chicken Little and I can't wait to share more from our adventures. ❤🐓 #protectourpubliclands #paintedhills #johndayfossilbeds #obsessedwithoregon #vanlife #getout #stayout #chickenlittletravels #adventurechicken #sciencenerd #fossilsarecool #soisclay #geekedoutonourearth #😍🌍

“Living in a world where your existence alone is considered an act of radical self love and resistance, the outdoors provides me with a sense of relief, tranquility and affirmation. Gentle reminders from the elements remind me that I am strong, I am able and I belong. A warm shield from the evil that exists in the world, letting us know that this earth is so much bigger and kinder than we are. Forever taking time to express gratitude for the world around me, and the opportunity to experience Mother Nature. What a privilege it is that I get to exist because of you, in you and with you. I am a man of trans* experience, I am a hiker, and I belong here.” -Dani / @dammmnit_dani ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Pronouns: he/him ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Location: Eagle Creek, Columbia River Gorge, Oregon. Vedauwoo - located in southeastern Wyoming within Medicine Bow National Forest. It's name, according to some, is a romanized version of the Arapaho word "bito'o'wu" meaning "earth-born". The hoodoos and outcrops are composed of 1.4 billion year old Sherman granite. “I’ve said this many times, hiking is such a metaphor for life.... there are obstacles, some that are easier than others and some that seem nearly impossible, but there is always a point where you’re so grateful for every hurdle you’ve tackled because the reward is oh so sweet. I sometimes get discouraged because those beautiful moments seem fleeting, but such are the ebbs and flows of life. The lesson that I continue to learn is to enjoy the present moment, the hurdles and the rewards because in the end it all makes up our story. These adventures and lessons this year have taught me so much and I’m so grateful.” -@michellecanfly of @outdoorjournaltour ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Location: Rabun Bald, Georgia. Happy Birthday to White Sands National Monument founded this day in 1933. It is the most wonderful sand box you will ever play in. •••••• Many thanks to Sandra @nationalparkpatchlady for the goodness of the dunes. ——— Happy birthday to one of my favorite National Park sites, White Sands National Monument. ⠀ ⠀ Gypsum rarely occurs as sand because it is water-soluble. Normally, rain would dissolve the gypsum and carry it to the sea. The Tularosa Basin has no outlet to the sea, so it traps rain that dissolves gypsum from the surrounding San Andres and Sacramento Mountains. Thus water either sinks into the ground, or forms shallow pools that subsequently dry out and leave gypsum on the surface in a crystalline form called selenite. ⠀ ⠀ 📍: White Sands National Monument, NM⠀ 📅 : July 2017⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #travel #explore #learn #nationalparkgeek #findyourpark ⠀ ——— #nationalparkgeek #FYPyes #nps #nationalpark #nationalparks #americasbestidea #findyourpark #goparks #nationalparkfoundation #everykidinapark #nature #naturelovers #npca #nationalparktrust #protectourpubliclands #climatechangeisreal #wnpa1938

The wording on these signs are so important. The distinction that it is OUR land. And I’ll be damned if some real estate developer out of New York City (who only sees the value of a places for what’s under the ground or can be harvest from it, instead of the true irreplaceable value as it is), is going to tell us what’s worth protecting. There’s a lot more to life than the dollar to be made at any cost. #protectourpubliclands #openspace

Last year, more than any other year, I explored and enjoyed wild places. This year, my goal is to do my part to protect them. I’ve registered to run the Bryce Canyon Ultras for Team Sierra to benefit the Sierra Club, an environmental organization dedicated to exploring, enjoying and protecting our planet. To train for this event, I’ll be running 1000 miles from January to June. During this time, my goal is to raise $1000. Running the 50-mile ultramarathon in June will be a celebration of accomplishing this goal.
