Went to Quarry Bank Mill yesterday. I didn't fancy it at all at first, I find mills depressing places. They remind me of prisons and I feel that they were very similar to them in lots of ways. Long hours, terrible working conditions, child-labour, runaways and death! So thank goodness for the gardens and The Tiger Who Came to Tea! I used to read this book all the time to Emily, we had the CD too for when we were in the car. I love Judith Kerr's work. To see her original art work was so interesting. Not sure what the other adults thought of us though, hanging around the tiger to get a picture of him. The place was full of parents with small children, and then us two! I think Dad would have liked the steam power room and would have understood it all much better than me. Mum would have enjoyed telling us all about the mill she worked in before she got married. Maybe I'll get them to visit one day.
